Stop snoring surgeries became available because of the developing technology. Experts were able to make these procedures as outstanding stop snoring solutions. However, as far as snoring problems is concerned, these stop snoring surgeries cannot be readily available to everybody. A series of assessment and diagnostic procedures should first be carried out before a person is subjected to a specific type of surgery to stop the snoring problem. When all simple and non-invasive solutions are ineffective to minimize or stop the problem, this is when stop snoring surgeries comes in.

In general, stop snoring surgeries are directed to modify a structure, particularly in the area around the palate inside the mouth. Basically, snoring is a result in the structural abnormalities located in the palate or in the nasal area. Should there be a palate or nasal related disorder aside from snoring, these conditions should be addressed first. When stop snoring surgeries are done without proper assessment, there could a life threatening effect during or after the surgery.

The main point of stop snoring surgeries is to correct the structure of the palate. In one way or another, the area around the throat, also known as the oropharyngeal segment, collapses. The procedure includes removing the excess tissues in the area. These excess tissues can be a portion of the soft palate or the tonsils. Even though surgeons know which tissues and where in particular to do the reduction, they still have to know up to what extent does the obstruction go in relation to snoring problems. To determine this, the patient has to undergo nasendoscopy. Nasendoscopy is a procedure in which a flexible tube, or endoscope, is inserted into the nasal passages. This tube is optimized with a viewing system, or a small camera, enabling the surgeon to see the severity of obstruction and where the excess tissues are specifically located. Before the procedure, the patient is subjected under general anesthesia. Nasendoscopy is not really necessary because it is quite expensive and time-consuming. However, it is still recommended to increase the success rate of stop snoring surgeries and reduce surgical risks.

Due to the number of available stop snoring surgeries to address the problem, health care professionals take an extra care on which type of surgery to perform. A sleep study before the surgery is a must. The basic types of stop snoring surgery are the UPPP or Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, LAUP or Laser-assisted uvuloplatoplasty, the Radio-frequency ablation or somnoplasty and the Platal stiffening operations or the CAPSO.
