There are over 80, 000 chemicals around us! Only few of the cleaning agents have been examined for toxic effects. Whilst there is no enough information on how these chemicals affect our health and environment, there are more than 80,000 chemicals that are conventionally used at homes. Yet, still more chemicals need to be tested as only less than 10% of these chemicals are analyzed and assayed. Simple Things May Do. The effects of conventional cleaners are pernicious and damaging to health and environment; even exposure in small amounts of these chemicals. According to a chemical engineer, baking soda plus vinegar will do as a cleaning material. He added that bacteria are not necessarily to be killed; instead, simply putting them away in our tables are enough. Vinegar with baking soda brings a cleaner and a shinier surface. As far as simple hand washing soap is a point of issue, an epidemiology professor of Michigan University claimed that regular soap is enough to clean hands, and to buy an antibacterial soap in unnecessary. Let’s Name Them. Let’s identify some of the unhealthy chemicals. Volatile compounds. rnOne of the cleaning agents that can cause impaired neurological, reproductive and respiratory function. Phosphates. Phosphates become harmful to the environment when in large amounts, resulting to algal bloom. Algal bloom is unfavorable to the environment by decreasing oxygen supply to the body of water and blocking the sunlight that would kill a number of water species. Chlorine. rnChlorine is one of the common yet harshest chemicals. It kills germs but is not friendly to human skin. Chlorine is used in laundry shops, homes and anywhere. Chlorine when combined with other cleaning agents like ammonia is more harmful. The result of the amalgam is extremely toxic and oftentimes, carcinogenic. Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products. Natural and homemade cleaning products are as effective as commercial cleaning agents. Look for natural and safer alternatives in cleaning your homes. One alternative is hydrogen or vinegar in replacement of chlorine bleach. An eco-friendly cleaning product does not contain lye, chlorine, alcohol, ammonia and tricolasan chemical. On the other hand, cleansers with labels: phosphate-free, solvent-free, b, VOC-biodegradable, are safer and considered as eco-friendly cleaning products. Eco-friendly cleaning products are those non-toxic cleaning agents and at the same time, user-friendly. Since 1960, Federal Hazardous Substances Labelling Act has passed by the US government to exclude dangerous ingredients in the household and cleaning products. A report says that exposure to non-eco-friendly cleaning products plays 15% of asthma cases.
