Sweet Pain

Oxymoron or truth? We all want to feel good, but what do we do when we don’t feel good? Maybe someone has hurt us…we’re disappointed…maybe we’re mad or feeling really heavy…depressed. Eckhart Tolle refers to the pain body in his books and with the recent attention given to A New Earth, people’s awareness of their pain bodies is on the rise.
This awareness has been a wonderful gift and the journey seems to be leading us to the different ways to get beyond the pain and to connect to the peace and tranquility we desire in our lives; a journey that I am so thankful to have been on for the past 10 years.
I’ve had to deal with my fair share of the pain of my emotional body, a term that I learned to use. Whatever name we want to call it doesn’t really matter….the truth of it is that it doesn’t feel good and we all experience it!
With the guidance of my teacher, I’ve learned to look at this pain from a different perspective. Pain can be very sweet, maybe not when we’re in the center of the fire of the emotions, but when we look back with more clarity.
Many of us tend to run away from our emotions. “Ugh..I feel yucky – mad, hurt, disappointed…Nope, don’t want to go there!” We bounce ourselves out of the pain almost as if there was an inner springboard. We may go to distraction; get busy with work, grab a drink or create a buffer to the feelings by eating, usually things that wouldn’t necessarily be considered good for us, until the resonance of the pain dissipates, having settled down; maybe all the way down to our big toe! Been there? I know I have!
Then the next time comes around and we once again catapult ourselves out of what doesn’t feel good or maybe the victim in us keeps us stuck in the muddy emotions…we become reactive or the darkness of depression sets in and we begin to wear our emotional body like a piece of clothing.
Many suggest that the past is the past and that we don’t have to relive it in order to feel good. I believe that the not feeling good in the present moment is merely the past resurfacing within us and we feel the knot in our solar plexus over and over again. We can’t release what we don’t allow ourselves to feel…fully.
To stay in the fire of painful emotions can actually lead us to the freedom of them – it takes practice and commitment to want to feel better, happier, and more peaceful in our lives.
So throw away the inner spring board and dive right in…feel…feel more…stay inside and do the inner work.* When we stick with it we can look back on it as sweet pain – an oxymoron, but nevertheless true!nn* The Inner Workout™ - The Bridge to Emotional Freedom – Colleen Hoffman Smith autho
