Glaucoma is known to be the disease of the most important nerve of vision, called the optic nerve. This nerve receive the light signals from the retina of the eye and sends it forward to the brain resulting in what we see. The damage of the optic nerve, usually by the increase in pressure can cause partial blindness or complete blindness.
What causes Glaucoma: As discussed above, the main and the most common reason for glaucoma is the elevated eye pressure which leads to the damage to the optic nerve. There is a certain fluid in the eyes that is responsible for the clear vision and when anything blocks or slows the flow of the fluid causes an increase in pressure to the eye causing damage to optic nerve. It is not necessary that people with high eye pressure only suffer from glaucoma. People with low eye pressure or even the normal eye pressure can suffer from glaucoma.

Risk factors of Glaucoma: If not diagnosed before hand, the increased eye pressure can lead to blindness. While some people are at low risk, there are people who are at a higher risk due to their age being above 40, myopia or hypermetropia, hereditary factor, or diabetes among others. It is recommended that one should get the eyes diagnosed at regular intervals because such conditions can be treated easily if diagnosed early.

Symptoms of Glaucoma: A person might undergo symptoms such as severe eye pain, headache, nausea, vision problems, eye redness, enlargement of pupil of the eye in the initial stages of glaucoma which can go upto partial or sometimes complete blindness.

How often should I get my eyes checked: It is advised that with the increase in age, a person should keep decreasing the time gap for a check-up for an instance a person in his 20’s can get his eyes checked once every 4-5 years whereas a person of 65 years should get them checked once or twice every year. People with hereditary history should keep in touch with their doctor regularly.

How can it be treated: Although there are various medications available in the market apart from the option of surgery which is not usually recommended, Glaucoma can be treated with the use of Alphagan eye drops. These drops help in maintaining/lowering the pressure of the eye, whichever is required. It does not affect any other part of the body. The dosage of Alphagan eye drops should be consulted with doctor before its use.

Food for thought: People suffering from Glaucoma can buy Alphagan eye drops from Canadian Online Pharmacy.
