A stuffy or runny nose, post-nasal drip, incessant sneezing, watery eyes, and a sore throat - these are some of the classic symptoms of common cold, which we easily recognize. But many of us are not aware of the fact that an episode of common cold can often turn into something more serious - like sinusitis. It has been perceived that acute sinusitis, which is considered as the most common type of sinusitis, is frequently followed by a recent episode of cold.

Sinusitis alludes to the swelling or inflammation of the air-filled cavities located in our forehead and behind the cheekbones. An inflammation of these cavities can induce a buildup of mucus within them, which thus increases the risk of infections. It has been perceived that nasal congestion induced by common cold can increase the risk of getting a sinus infection considerably.

Symptoms or signs that show your cold is turning into sinus infection:

  • Thick nasal mucus
  • A persistent headache
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Pressure around the eyes
  • A cough that is worse in the morning
  • Toothache or sensitivity
  • Reduced sense of taste and smell

These symptoms that last for more than a week show the sign that your cold is turning into sinus infection.

Prevent cold from turning into sinus infection:

  • Drink plenty of water: Keep yourself hydrated by drinking about 10 to 12 glasses of water daily. This helps in thinning the mucus and facilitating its drainage.
  • Avoid coffee and tea: They are known to dehydrate the body and hence it is better to avoid it for few days until your cold subsides.
  • Use saline nasal sprays: Irrigating your nose with saline water helps you keep your sinus clear by promoting their drainage.
  • Use decongestants: Nasal congestion can block the sinus passages and prevent their drainage. This can generate a favorable environment for the growth of infectious agents. Decongestants help to get relief from nasal congestion and thus reduce the risk of developing a sinus infection
  • Avoid smoking: While smoking has many dangerous effects, it can worsen cold symptoms and increase the risk of getting sinus infection. Therefore you should avoid smoking if you are suffering from cold and cough.
  • Avoid pollutants: Exposure to environmental pollutants like fumes, chemicals, and dust can irritate the delicate lining of your nasal passages and sinuses.
  • Wash your hands frequently: To prevent the germs from spreading wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Blow your nose gently: Vigorous blowing can push back thick mucus into your sinuses and thus spread bacteria and other harmful microorganisms that can cause an infection.
  • Inhale steam: Steam inhalation is one of the most effective home remedies for relieving nasal congestion.
  • Apply a warm compress: A warm compress can also help relieve congestion and ensure better drainage of mucus. You can keep a damp and hot towel on your face for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day to clear up your nasal passages.
