Symptoms And Treatment For Benign Positional Vertigo

The most common cause of vertigo is BPV or benign positional vertigo. It is characterized by a sudden sense of spinning or the feeling like your head is spinning from the inside. It is a common disorder of the inner ear. Small calcium carbonate crystals are dislodged and move into the semicircular canals. BPV is not life threatening. The symptoms of BPV are brought on by specific movements of the head or body. So in other words BPV is a non life threatening disorder caused by specific movements often resulting to a spinning sensation. BPV usually lasts only a short period of time but sometimes it could be intense that it could result to loss of balance, disorientation, and nausea. BPV has no major risk factors. According to research BPV could be a hereditary condition which means the condition is present at birth and it was passed on by the mother or father or both. In some cases, history of a head injury or a history of an inner ear condition can make an individual more susceptible in developing BPV. Benign positional vertigo symptoms are: biliousnessrnhazy visionrndizzinessrnvertigornnausearnimbalancernlightheadednessrnunsteadinessrnThere are some interesting facts regarding BPV and some of them are: This condition can develop at any age but usually it occurs as we get older.rnWomen are slightly more susceptible in developing BPV than men.rnNormally, this condition can be triggered by a trauma to the head or from an infection but in some cases BPV develop out of the blue with no cause at all.rnIf a person had a history of it, he is more likely to get the disorder again.rnBPV could affect and occur on both ears.rnPhysical examination is the first step in BPV diagnosis. The physician will do some tests such as Dix-Hallpike maneuver, caloric stimulation, hearing evaluation, MRI, CT Scan, ENG, EEG, and neurological exam to rule out other conditions. The most effective treatment of BPV according to some physician is the Epley's maneuver. It is done by moving the dislodged calcium to other part of the inner ear where it will no longer cause any problem. Medications can help relieve the spinning sensations. However, medications alone are not effective in treating vertigo. There are also home remedies and treatment one can work to manage the symptoms of the condition. One good example of this is regular intake of vitamins and supplements that can help regulate calcium blood levels.
