When you are younger you tend to take more risks, and teens learning to drive do just that. Car accidents in the U.S. are the number one cause of death among teens. Insurance companies see teen drivers as a very high risk and adjust premiums to reflect that level of risk. In some states, just having a child that has reached the legal driving age can allow the insurance company to increase you rates. The laws of each individual of the states determine whether or not your teen will automatically be included in your insurance policy. It is best to check with your insurance company to find out before something like that may happen and try to cancel the possibility of it happening. There are things you can do to try and keep your rates down as much as possible. On e of your best options is a defensive driving course.
Defensive driving courses are used by insurance companies to adjust the insurance rates for drivers all over the country. This is due to the nature of the courses statistically decreasing the rates of accidents for those that complete them; this includes both adults and teen drivers. Since the whole point of a defensive driving class is to teach safety and informing drivers on how to avoid risks on the road, the insurance companies will then lower their rates and reward these educated policy holders.
If your primary reason to sign up for a defensive driving class is to get a discount on your insurance you may first want to check with your company because some do not offer a discount. Some companies will provide you with a list of a specific defensive driving school or course that they recommend in order to qualify for a discount. The benefit of taking a defensive driving course isn’t just lowering your insurance rate; you may learn new skills that will keep you safer on the road.
Making sure any teen driver in your family take a defensive driving course is a great idea. The classes are built to work around different schedules. The course can be completed in one long learning day or broken up into hours over the course of certain days. The learning is done in a classroom environment where they will learn about cars, traffic, laws of the road and how to avoid getting into accidents. At the end of the class testing will be done. When you pass the test and have the right paper work you may then show that to the insurance company to qualify for a discount. Defensive driving classes and education has come along way and there are many schools offering these courses. It would be smart to shop around and read reviews to find the best one.
