It’s peculiar that eye care is an often neglected area of personal hygiene. One’s eyes are an extremely important part of their body and good vision is a gift that many people don’t have. If you want to ensure that you can see well into the future, it’s essential that your daily eye care habits are strong. There are many different problems that can arise when eye care is neglected. Some conditions are common like dry eyes or itchy eyes, but other ocular conditions can be serious and require proper treatment. Dry eye treatment is not a big issue, but something like blepharitis treatment may be more involved. In any case, preventative care is always the best option. Here are some tips to keep your eyes healthy and happy. Stop Rubbing Getting something stuck in your eye like an eyelash or dust can be annoying. But you should never rub your eyes after this happens. If you do rub your eyes vigorously it can cause the particle in your eyes to get lodged and make things worse. If things get really bad it could end up scratching your cornea. The proper approach to take is to blink very fast several times to try and dislodge whatever seems to be stuck. Once you start tearing up, use water to try and wash your eyes clean. Rubbing is never a good option. Get Some Rest Another aspect of good eye health is rest. Not only is it important to rest your eyes from strain, as mentioned above, but also to get enough sleep. Sleeping helps to restore the functions of the eyes. Further if you often wear contact lenses, be sure not to sleep with them on. Your eyes need to breathe and the best time for this is when you sleep. If you have the opportunity, wear your eye glasses instead of always putting in your contact lenses. This can help balance the rest and strain your eyes receive on a daily basis. Prevent Eye Strain Many people, especially in today’s office lifestyle, spend their time staring at a computer screen of some sort. The emissions from such devices can be harmful in high doses so it’s usually a good idea to rest your eyes throughout your work day. Every hour, try and get up from in front of the screen and move around. This will help give your dry or itchy eyes a break from the radiation that spills out from computer, phone and television screens. Eat Right and Protect Yourself It may not seem like it at first thought, but diet plays an important role in the health of your eyes. You should be eating healthy and nutritious foods for a majority of your meals. Fruits and vegetables (especially things like carrots) are your best friends in this regard. You should also be trying to drink at least 8 fluid ounces of water daily. A healthy diet helps keep your body in check, and this includes the eyes. Further, you want to be careful when doing anything that may be harmful to your eyes. Obviously if you’re working with chemicals, wood or metal you’ll want to wear proper eye protection. And when you’re in the outdoors on a sunny day, try to wear sunglasses with UV protection. This will help your eyes stay strong and healthy. If you ever feel your eyes getting tired, dry or itchy, splash them with cold water to try and refresh them. Making sure your eyes are healthy is not an extremely burdening habit. You can work all the above suggested tips into your daily routine and lifestyle with great ease. And by doing these things you’ll help ensure your eyes are healthy and happy for years to come. Remember, you only have one pair of eyes. Don’t waste them!
