While there are numerous benefits to taking small size fish oil capsules, as with all things in life, it should be done in moderation. Taking an over abundance of vitamin supplements can be detrimental to your body and it is no different when it comes to small fish oil capsules. Though the side effects of small fish oil pills are few, there are still things to consider when taking too much of this normally beneficial supplement.

The side effects of taking too many small fish oil capsules generally occur when taking enormously large doses over a long period of time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends taking up to three grams of omega 3 fatty acids a day from fish. The case is different however for diabetics, those at risk for bleeding, people with fish allergies and young children and women who are breast-feeding or pregnant. These particular subsets of people may be at a higher risk for fish oil side effects.

Negative side effects of taking too many small fish oil pills also affect those with congestive heart failure, bleeding disorders and those who take blood thinners. Other side effects of small size fish oil capsules include:

An increased risk of bleeding. Small fish oil pills tend to decrease blood platelets from clumping together and in turn, result in an increased chance of blood in nosebleeds, as well as urine.

High intake of toxins such as methylmercury, PCBs and dioxin which are all found in numerous types of fish. As fish oil supplements are known to be filtered, they do not usually contain these toxins. However, babies and women who are nursing or pregnant are more sensitive to theses side effects and should retain from taking in too much fish oil.

Allergic reactions have been known to be found in rare cases. Side effects of these reactions include skin rashes, itching, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing and swelling of the throat.

Stomach and gastrointestinal upset. Some people have been known to feel symptoms of diarrhea and nausea when taking too many small fish oil capsules. These symptoms will typically only get worse with higher amounts. Side effects like heartburn, bad breath, burping, stomach pain, bloating and indigestion have also been known to occur.

Though there are numerous benefits to taking in the proper amount of fish oil, taking too much can prove to be hazardous. Consult with your doctor on the proper amount of vitamin supplements your body should be taking in order to perform at its finest.
