We usually associate clear, flawless skin with young adults in their 20s. Most, if not all enjoy smooth skin when we were younger. If the skin is not well taken care of, you may be setting yourself up for bad complexion when you hit your 40s or beyond. Although bad skin can be salvaged, it takes a lot of work and effort to restore the complexion you once had. As we age, the distribution of melanocytes in our skin becomes uneven. Chronic exposure to the sun stimulates melanocytes to secrete the pigment melanin. This results in the formation and appearance of dark spots on the skin, also known as hyperigmentation. Hyperpigmentation affects most people, regardless of skin color or ethnic background. The skin may appear lighter, or darker than the surrounding skin. Skin pigmentation disorders generally occur because the body produces either too much or too little melanin. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an increased level of melanin production in the skin. It can be largely categorised into 2 types: • LIVER SPOTS: These are darkened spots on the skin due to chronic exposure to the sun as well as aging. Liver spots are very common in old people who did little to protect themselves from the sun when they were young. • MELASMA: It is a common condition where dark, irregular well-demarcated hyperpigmented patches are usually found on areas of the face such as cheek, nose, forehead, and lips. Commonly know as the 'mask of pregnancy', melasma sufferers are mainly pregnant women or those taking hormones replacement therapy pills. PIGMENTATION TREATMENT WITH LASERS Specially designed by Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics, Flawless Skin Program is combination laser therapy developed to treat challenging pigmentation problems. “Pigmentation is a complex problem which requires customized, combined laser regimes to treat for an effective outcome,” says Dr. Siew. Most clinics offer one type of laser to treat all types of hyperpigmentation. At Radium Medical Aesthetics, we do things different. “Everyone is unique and the most effective treatment for you has to be specially tailored and customized for you to bring out the best beneficial outcome.” he added. This is why Flawless Skin Program is a highly customizable 5-session program that consists of 5 different types of laser. LASEMD Skin Perfecting Laser is backed by fractional thulium laser technology. It is a gentle skin resurfacing treatmentthat creates micro-wounds in the superficial layer of the skin to target pigment deposits at their roots. As the beam diameter is about 17% smaller than other regular laser machines, the downtime of LASEMD treatment is likely to be significantly shorter than other laser treatments. The best part is that it does not compromising the efficacy of the treatment. In addition, LASEMD Laser has another unique capability. Its Cosmeceutical Delivery System creates micro-channels on the face so that it greatly enhance absorption rate of the serum. The Flawless Skin Program also consists of Skin Brightening Laser to further break down residual melanin in the skin. The Skin Brightening Laser treatment uses the Spectra XT Platform with Optimum Lacttice technology to clear stubborn pigments effectively. The unique capability of the Skin Brightening Laser is that it targets the pigment cells effectively without harming the surrounding skin. Depending on the type(s) of hyperpigmentation, Dr. Siew may also add Ruvy Touch Pigment Laser to target epidermal pigments such as age spots and freckles. Ruvy Touch Pigment Laser allows vessels to remain unharmed, therefore minimising damage to the surrounding skin. After every session of the intense combination laser therapy, Dr. Siew usually finishes each session with an Anti-Redness Gold Toning Laser to reduce the red areas on the skin. Anti-Redness Gold Toning Laser dissipates red, inflamed areas on the skin with a gold beam of light. This helps to reduce the inflammation and redness of the skin after the laser treatment. Flawless Skin Program is only offered at Radium Medical Aesthetics. Find out more about the unique, customisable program today.
