Heel pain will plague 1 in 10 adults during the course of their lives. Anyone who leads an active life could become susceptible to heel pain. There are many things that can lead to heel pain including vigorous exercise, being on your feet many hours a day, weight gain, or excessively low or high arches in shoes without proper support.
Most people describe heel pain as a sharp, burning or sometimes bruise like pain. This can subside over time as you walk and move around but usually some degree of pain will linger. After periods of rest such as first thing in the morning or after a period of sitting or lying down, heel pain is usually worst. Generally this condition is caused by over pronation of the foot. Over Pronation leads to a misalignment of the bones in the foot and places extra strain on the plantar fascia. Over pronation, occurs when the foot rolls inward while walking or running and is recognizable when there is excessive wear on the inside portion of an individual's shoe soles. This action places extra pressure on the arch of the foot and stretches the "rubber band" in the foot. This is caused by poor alignment of the bones of the foot. This condition can be easily prevented by ensuring proper alignment of the foot.
