tax tables are incredibly confusing. Many us taxpayers make a number of mistakes.Tax legal professional Anthony Parent explains what the myths are, and how to avoid common problems.

The notion of tax bracekts have rather Marxist roots, although many may disagree. In reality, the first peacetime income tax voted for by Congress was deemed illegal upon the ruling that Congress has no power to scrutinize how much any citizen earned – it insulted liberty far too much.It was deemed to be too big an invasion from powers Congress did not possess. The courts could not permit the income tax to exist because the Constitution did not give Congress the power to impose an income tax.

Progressives eventually persuaded the public to accept the 16th Amendment which would give congress the ability to impose a tax on income from whatever source derived. Most americans at the time thought the income tax would be minor and only affect a a small amount of taxpayers. And not themselves.

Once Congress had the legal authority to assess an income tax brackets, rapidly the promised restricted scope of the income tax was widened to drag down nearly everyone down. FDR was succesful in creating an totally novel kind of tax assessed on earnings: the employment taxes.

The IRS also extracts employment and self-employment taxes which nearly affect all wage earners. Employment and self employment taxes comprise over half of all taxes the IRS extracts from individual taxpayers. Tax brackets are totally silent to employment and self employment taxes.

The existing tax bracket rates of 10, 15, 25, 28, 33, and 35% for individual taxpayers. Which tax brackets rate a taxpayer falls in just does not depend on income earnings, but also tax filing status. None of these tax bracket rates include the tax charge for employment taxes. This omission is significant.

And for certain types of income, the tax brackets don't apply at all. Income that comes from from passive income, long-term capital gains and dividends are taxed at rates totally different than the tax bracket rate. Not only that, but employment taxes are not assessed either.

Also, many upper income earners are subject to the Alte
ative Minimum Tax. To further confuse things, the Alte
ative Mimimum tax brackets may be relevant. The Alte
ative Minimum Tax has totally different tax brackets. Those tax rates are 26 or 28%. The Alte
ative Minimum Tax brackets are either 26 or 28%. Even though those tax rates are lesser than the standard tax brackets, the effective tax rates can be higher as because with the AMT, the IRS denies several write-offs. Local and State taxes are not allowed as write-offs.
There is vastly little significance to tax rates. What is more significant is the actual taxable rate. Relying on the tax brackets to plan what you will be in debt can lead to giantblunders.
