Taylorism or scientific management in manufacturing firms

Fredrick Taylor was an American mechanical engineer who noticed the mismanagement in industries and manufacturing firms and sought to improve industrial efficiency. In his quest to increase the output of manufacturers and their firms, he coined the word scientific management, which is also called Taylorism. Scientific management was the theory of management in which he proposed to analyze and synthesize the work flows. The main dominating stress in the theory is on the improvement of economy, especially on the labour productivity. He was the first one to apply science to the management and to the processes of engineering. Although in 1930 the idea of Taylor about scientific management becomes obsolete but its main themes are still practised today in industrial engineering and management. The main themes of scientific management are analysis, synthesis, logic, rationality, efficiency and elimination of waste, standardization of best practises, work ethic, empiricism, documentation and transformation of craft production into mass production and also transfer of knowledge between workers and from workers in to tools. All these themes are main policies and principals of big wholesale manufacturing firms but still these themes are not followed in many manufacturing firms. Every manufacturer should adopt these policies step by step to increase the output of workers and convert craft production into mass production. Manufacturer should have two major points in mind which should be consulted while applying policies in the firm. First of all, the improvement of the economy as a whole should be the prime motto because the ultimate perfection is only achieved when the country’s economy is running smooth. The second point is to increase the productivity of the workers; the progress of the company is only possible when the workers are generating maximum output from their capacity. Work ethic is also one of the major themes of scientific management; the managing officials of the firm should devise new rules and policies keeping in view the ethics and implement them on workers. Workers should also be given rest breaks according to the environment and nature of the work. The wholesale manufacturing firm should also give incentives to workers who work more then their assigned duties, while also removing slow workers as the whole firm work as a team and even one worker will slow down the whole processing of the firm. When all these policies will be applied simultaneously on the firm then the output will be dramatically increased with in short span of time.
