Laser pointers are usually used to assist speakers or teachers when giving speeches, classes, lectures or presentations. As they could produce a small, bright dot of light on the target object, they easily draw listeners or audience attention to a particular point. Lasers have become affordable for every one of us, including children. You could find cheap laser pointers widely available in online electronic stores, gift shops, novelty stores or other places. These gadgets could be as cheap as $18 or even less. So some people mistakenly treat them as normal toys. That's dangerous. If kids use laser pointer, no matter green laser or red laser, improperly, they might suffer from: Flash blindness - It happens when someone is exposed to a bright light source suddenly. This only lasts for a few seconds.rnGlare - It is a reduction of visibility, usually happens when the pointer directly points at the eyes.rnAfterimages – This would make your vision have small spots in eyesight for several days. Although all of these associated eye problems are not permanent damages to our eyes, more serious damage will happen on our kid eyes if the exposure is prolonged. Generally, laser pointer with 5mw or below is safe. It is not recommended to stare at it for more than 1 minute. Plus, common people usually have no tools to test the real power of the laser while many lasers have a wrong power description on their label. So be careful when you deal with laser products, especially when you buy them for playing with your kids. Laser pointers are not toys, at least not a safe toy for pranks. In the Autumn of 1996, a girl aged 16 was illuminated in the eye from laser pointer beam when her friend play prank with her. Her friends point the laser to her eye for two times, but both momentarily. According to her expression, after the first exposure, everything looked green while her right eye could see nothing after the second exposure. Teaching your kids basic laser pointer safety tips is also necessary: Shining a laser pointer directly at a person is very dangerous.rnReflected laser beam from reflective surface is also risky. Be careful when there is any mirror-like object in laser using environment.rnDo not buy a laser which has no caution or danger sticker to state its class.rnDo not use laser to play with friends. Don't ignore the teaching of laser safety to your children. It is too late when misery happens.
