Who does not want a photographic memory? Reasons to improve memory might be varied: some want it for preparations for an exam, some want to memorize roads and directions, some want it for delivering presentations and speeches, whereas some want to improve for personal reasons like developing social contacts. Our brain has tremendous power to compartmentalize and store different information. Over a period of time new memories are made and stored, making the older memories difficult to recall. This is where people say they have memory loss problem.
It so happens that you tend to forget somebody's name just a few minutes after you've asked, or you lose your way on a road you use very often. This happens because sometimes we fail to provide attention to the details and take things for granted; therefore, we are not able to recall certain things at the required time. Memory loss may be due to age, disease, or simply because we do not know how to use our brain more efficiently.
Help Available to Improve Memory
Memory improvement techniques are very helpful in improving a person's memory, regardless of age. Many websites have audio tools and techniques which can be applied to improve memory over time. One very common and easy tool is doing exercise. When we do cardiovascular exercise, it not only provides good health, but also improves the brains health. Improved blood circulation and oxygen to the brain help get better cognitive skills and a feel-good factor.
Some common tricks and trade of improving memory include chunking the information into small groups, linking the list of things in a logical manner, make rhyming sentences to remember some data, and making bridges between related information. For example, if you need to pick up pencil, notebook, carrot, and milk from a supermarket, you can link these items like: pencils to write on a notebook and carrot and milk to make carrot pudding.
Playing mind games improves memory in a fun way. Playing games on internet, phone, board games, or console games all serve the purpose of providing exercise to your brain to improve different kind of memory. The matching games, trivia games, puzzles like jigsaw, Sudoku, crossword provide enough stimulation for the brain which helps in improving memory.
Eat Right and Sleep Right
Next, one must give importance to a healthy diet, regular eating time, having more brain food and supplements as required. All this supports the brain function, and helps in memory improvement. Another very important aspect is supporting the mental health. This means if we keep our brain free of negative thoughts, stress, and tension, its performance is bound to increase. For this a good relaxing and adequate sleep and some exercises for brain are recommended. Nobody should sleep less than six hours; as per requirement eight hours sleep is ideal.
For mental stress relieving exercises, Yoga, Meditation, Massage, and playing active outdoor sport are very effective. Some form of recreating is also required for good memory. Recreational activities like watching a movie, playing with kids, gardening, visiting a friend, going to the spa, and many more, relax the mind and help in improving memory.
All techniques to improve memory vary from person to person, but one thing must be kept in mind that memory improvement is possible. Regardless of age factor, everybody can have a better memory and a better functioning brain.
