Many people who are investigating TEFL courses are rightly concerned about how well they are increasing their chances for employment. Although the coursework is not as taxing as attending university for an advanced English degree, it is also not a walk in the park. It requires a lot of work during the shorter period the courses are taught. Many people look at the chance to obtain a TEFL certification carefully, knowing there are all sorts of training courses available. Some of these courses do not necessarily increase a person’s skills or general utility, but are politically correct and a boon to the resume and career. Conversely, other courses help teachers tremendously in their day-to-day teaching, but may not advance their career significantly. This ignores that other class of courses that do neither one. However, the good news is that TEFL graduates find that the coursework is not only beneficial to their career but to their effectiveness to be able to reach and teach non-English speaking students. Many people who are currently employed as teachers have their pulse on their school district and know how much teachers with TEFL courses are valued. In some areas where the district is committed to their non-English speaking students, and find themselves without sufficient qualified teachers, urge their English teachers to get this certification. In some cases, they will provide additional incentives, such as time off to take the courses, paying the tuition for the courses, and paying a completion bonus afterwards. Finding out the demand for teachers with TEFL training in other areas can take a bit of work. The power of a TEFL credential runs the gamut across institutions. Some schools will only accept teachers with university degrees in English to fulfill their TEFL requirements. Conversely, some institutions will accept teachers who have just taken TEFL courses, and do not yet have any actual experience. One strategy for researching demand in a target area or school is to check out the specific requirements for that target. Avoid going to the employment center to ask about requirements. It is better to show up for the first time with the proper preparation. In addition, you want to find out what the “real” requirements are, specifically those things that truly impress the hiring manager, not just the content of the advertisements. To do this, try to make a contact with one of the English teachers, preferably with TEFL training, and find out the requirements on your own. This will give you the information you need to determine your chances of getting employment at that school, and what requirements, for TEFL courses or otherwise, you will need to fulfill.
