Marketing your business online involves getting traffic to your website, and that will invariably involve some degree of organic search engine optimization. Making sure that your website accurately reflects your business and your products is a major part of optimizing your website to attract search engine attention. There are a number of things you can do to help your website rank high with search engines and attract the traffic you most want to attract.
Pinpoint the Right Keywords
Keywords are the terms that consumers use to search for information on the Internet. If you want people to find your website, you need to know what search terms they use to find products like yours.
Put the Right Keywords in Your Text
People may be visual, but search engines rely on text to tell them what a website is about. Use keywords in your text so that the search engines can classify your website properly.
Provide Focused Content
Keep your content tightly focused to avoid diluting the impact of the keywords. Most search engine marketing experts recommend that you optimize each web page for no more than one or two keywords to keep the impact high.
Don’t Overdo the Keywords
Forget everything you’ve heard about keyword density. Google’s Matt Cutts’ has said on the record that density is unimportant. Instead, use the keywords naturally along with related terms.
Use Meta Descriptions
While most SEO experts agree that the Meta Keywords tag has almost no effect at all, there are some very good reasons for writing a good meta description tag for your website. The most compelling is that Google will display the meta description as the snippet in the search results. Your description should tell searchers what they’ll find when they visit your page.
Include Location Information for Local SEO Value
If you rely on local customers, make sure the search engines know where your company is located. Include your street address and other location information in a footer, header or sidebar on every page on your site.
Maximize the Content on Your Website
Consider ways to make your website reflect more of what you do. If you run a restaurant, for example, posting your menu and specials on your website provides more information for your customers and for the search engines. A catalog can do the same thing if you offer products by mail. For nonprofit organizations, include information about your programming. The more information you provide, the more likely it is that people who are looking for your products or services will find you through a search engine.
Add a Blog to Your Website
A blog allows you to keep adding new, fresh content to your website without a lot of effort. You can use it to post tips for customers, information about new products, holiday greetings and more. The key is to provide information related to your business and to make it informative.
Launch a Link Building Strategy
Incoming links are an important part of search engine marketing, but link building can be time-consuming. It’s one of the areas where it makes sense for a business owner to bring in a professional consultant.
Get Social
Set up social media profiles and link them back to your website. If you make it a point to post to Facebook a few times a week and send out a few tweets daily on Twitter – and always make sure you post useful information – you’ll quickly build a following that can boost your organic search engine optimization efforts even further.
Building your search engine rankings with organic search engine optimization can be time consuming, especially if you have to learn a whole new skill to do it. Consider hiring a professional search engine marketing firm to get you off to a good start.
