If we looked back into our past each of us would have different experiences to remember. Each of us would have good times to remember where we had so much enjoyment in life with certain family members or friends. Each of us would have challenging times to remember where there were issues we had to deal with or witness that really made an impact on our lives.

Some memories are good ones and we sometimes believe it would be great to relive that part of our lives again. Other memories are those we wish we would have never had to experience and never want to go through it again. Either way, our past is over; however we should look back and remember both the good and bad. We need to especially remember how God has worked in our lives and share those stories.

Psalm 78:1-4 “O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty wonders.”

We need think about those good times fondly to share with our children and our children’s children. We need to write down and share our stories with them to let them know about the experiences we have had so the stories will continue through generations. We need to pass down the rituals we do each year to celebrate holidays and traditions. We need to keep the good part of our past alive through future generations.

We should look back at the challenging times and determine what we learned and how we can help others who may be in similar situations. There are times in our past where we had to experience bad things which we struggled through and, at the time, didn’t see an easy way out. We need to recall these bad experiences and ask God to help us learn what we need to do with these experiences to help others.

God has a way of taking what we did in our past to make each of us unique. He will take the experiences we have been through and show us a pattern in our lives where He is laying a foundation for us to begin building. He will create a path for us to take based on our past. God has created our life for a reason and it is up to us to find that story we can begin to share with others.

We may wonder why we had to have such a hard childhood or experience the things we did when we were younger. Looking back at our past and asking God to help us know what His will is for our lives will help us take the first step toward knowing God’s plan for our lives. We need to make the decision now that we want to make a difference and know what God wants us to learn from our past.

We all have gone through both good and bad experiences in life. We all have had times where God has worked in our lives. When we look back and determine what good God can do through us with our past experiences, we can use our life to help others. It may take some time to recall all the things we learned and did in our past, but the experience of writing it down or going through it in our minds will allow God to help us make a difference.
