If you are a business that serves local clients, you may be wondering how you can target your client base online. In today's world, SEO and marketing for local business is very important to the success of your business. If your company is not actively marketing online, you may be left behind. Marketing is not as easy as “putting out your shingle” anymore (a shingle is a small sign board), so you need to actively take the necessary steps to carve out a place for yourself online so that prospective clients can find you and hire you easily. Here are three ways to do just that:
First, build an online presence that targets local keywords. If you have no web site, or your site is simply a generic brochure-type site, it's time to get serious about it. This means that you craft the site in such a way that it ranks highly for certain SEO keywords. You can hire an SEO marketing company to do this for you. This way, you stand a better chance of showing up higher in the results of search engines when someone is searching for your type of business. For example, if you are a house painter in Philadelphia, a potential customer might search for “Philadelphia house painter”. If your site is built to rank highly for that phrase, then you stand a better chance of getting that customer.
Second, get listed in online directories. Whether they are local directories targeting your hometown or worldwide listings such as Google Places, either submit your information to be listed or claim the listing that is already there. Flesh it out with as many details as possible. You want to make it easy for your market to see who you are, what you do, and where you are located. Many businesses forget to do this, but there are loads of potential customers who are reading these directories, so it makes sense to take the time and ensure that your online presence in these directories is favorable to you.
Finally, ask for reviews and testimonials. Nothing helps marketing more than a good testimonial. Many of those online directories mentioned above offer places for customers to write reviews. There are even sites that are devoted to maintaining reviews, such as Yelp. Encourage your customers to share their experiences on these sites. This builds credibility with your market, and a good review can drive a lot of business to you.
If you spend time proactively building your web presence and improving your SEO rankings, you will find that business will pick up. Local businesses have a great opportunity in local SEO and online marketing, and they need to take advantage of it as soon as possible. If they don't, they may be leaving a considerable amount of money on the table.
