Now that summer – in the Northern hemisphere anyway – is truly here, it’s harder to stick to writing at my computer. With a new book in the works I content myself with gazing wistfully out of the window and, when the urge takes me, simply stop mid-sentence and wander out into the garden for twenty minutes or so. That’s when I reflect on how wonderful this life is.

Other times during the day I will see people who come for Emotional Fitness coaching. Not all of them share this same sense of wonder at life, at least not at first. Part of my great joy is to watch as someone goes through their transition. It’s almost like observing the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. This happens most dramatically during the courses that I run on one or two evenings a week.

I love working with individuals and small groups as they grow in self-esteem, enhance their relationships and create a new authentic fulfillment within their lives. Part of the beauty of this is that I get to do the same, alongside them.

Last weekend I explored one of my own questions through the Time Capsule, one of the steps of Inner Balancing that makes this work unique. The issue I wanted to look at was my difficulty in seeing how to reach a vision I have created for myself. One such vision, for example, is to bring my forthcoming book to a very large readership as a way of bringing Inner Balancing to many more people. In other words, how do I make this book a bestseller?

With the help of my Emotional Fitness coach-in-training, I recalled myself as a three-year-old boy, examining an aco
given to me by my great-grandfather. He told me that it would grow into an oak tree. I tried to imagine the aco
as an oak, but had a hard time doing so. When I had a dialogue between me now and me as a child, I told the small boy that sixty years on, the oak tree standing in that same place was once the aco
he held in his hand. That changed everything for me. Starting at the end and working back made the vision completely attainable. It’s something I know very well in theory, but this was the first time I got it at a deep emotional level. It was also the first time I understood the real significance of the acorn, although I have written about and shared the story many times. Some might say that I’m a slow learner; I celebrate the fact that I learned it now, just in time to make my vision a reality.

Take a little time to discover how you can nurture the aco
in your hand so that it grows into a great oak tree.
