The Basics of Antennas for Digital TV Transmission

There are two kinds of antennas, the indoor and the outdoor. For digital TV purposes know that there is no such thing as a digital TV antenna specifically for the use of the digital transmission. The antennas which were used for radio and analog TVs are the same ones used for digital transmissions. These antennas should be capable of transmitting both UHF and VHF signals. rnIndoor Antennas • Also known as directional antenna which has to be directed to the same direction where the transmitting station is sending the signals. • This is great for long range signals as long as its boom is pointing to the transmitter stationrn• There is less interference as long as the signal is unobstructedrn• rnOutdoor Antennas • No doubt about it, the outside receives better signals than the antennas inside the house. The UHF/VHF signals usually travel in a straight line so gets better signals as long as the line of sight is unobstructed. • This has to be placed on high ground like the apex of the roof and away from obstructing trees and its leaves. This can still be obstructed though by hills, mountains and high rise buildings or a house much higher than the apex of the roof. • Some people mount their outdoor antennas in the attic thinking that it would get better protection from the elements but this could mean weaker signal for the roof tiles, the insulation and the water tanks can obstruct the signals. • There combination outdoor/indoor antennas which can make it receive signals both inside and outside of the home. But this is only recommended in areas with good reception. • The outside antenna is the one most recommended because it gets better signal. Knowing the pros and cons of the antenna is important because the reception is really dependent on the area where it is to be installed and the signal that comes in. this should also guide the homeowner on which kind of antenna to buy if there is a need to purchase one.
