The term, website usability, has been around for quite a few years, and yet it is something that appears to be hardly talked about in the more heavily trafficked marketing forums. People seem to be so engrossed with traffic and other matters but usability does not seem to be on most peoples' radar. But people generally understand that a site really needs to be usable; on the other hand they do not always know how to optimize for usability. Of course it is obvious that your site needs to always be user friendly and motivates people to return. There is much to think about depending on the nature of your site, and the best way to approach this is to have information about what is happening. There is generally one method to monitoring our visitors, and that is through a good tracking program. The basic strategy is to discover where your website is under-performing; once done, you examine the location and begin making adjustments. But even though that is a relatively crude approach, there really is not much more we can do. Many tracking scripts are extremely simple, and of course you can use something powerful like Google Analytics. Using such a script will enable you to see the end result of what your visitors are doing. You can track entry and exit pages, or points. We think it's worth it to use a high quality script so you'll have a better idea about your site. You realize the value of optimization for conversions, and that's all this is about. Essentially you will be improving what is achievable for your most desired response on your site. When you are ready to make modifications on your site, then you will need to perform testing. As you may possibly know, there is basic A/B split testing and also Taguchi multivariate testing. Multivariate testing is a lot more powerful and diverse than split testing. You may take the somewhat blind approach and choose random aspects of your pages to test. Nevertheless, if you are tracking and notice visitors are constantly exiting on the same page, then that is a huge hint that something on that page is causing them to leave. The smart approach to optimization and testing is to discover where your site is poor so you can correct it. This process of usability does require time, but if you are serious about building a business it is worth doing. However, the long term results will be worth the time and hassle to do it. You can get your conversion rates to a rewarding level, and that is what this is all about. The end game is increased success and sustained business growth.
