Energy efficient home or energy-saving home is also called ‘green building’ or ‘sustainable design’ home. This type of homes became very popular during oil and power crisis in the 1970s. These types of homes are normally more expensive than the homes built based on conventional designs.
Nevertheless, they certainly contribute to the recovery of the cost of investment within a few years through reduced energy consumption, besides being instrumental in improving the environment all over the world making it pollution-free. Energy-saving homes utilize recyclable materials for building the home as well as maintaining it. These houses are constructed either from forest wood or bricks made from earth.
The homes constructed using these materials seek to decrease consumption of certain essential services such as electric power and water. The usage water can be curtailed by operating appliances that consume less water and more than that water consumption can be decreased by recycling water with in the house.
For example, ‘grey water’ such as bathwater or dishwater can be reused for watering the plants at the home garden and in order to meet any shortage of water, rain water can also be collected for this purpose. These methods reduce the amount of waste going into the sewage system, besides curtailing water consumption.
In an excellent energy-efficient home every bit of it is utilized in some form or the other and there is nothing like discarding anything. For example, several technological developments have now made it possible to recycle even human waste for converting into compost for use in the garden as fertilizer. While using discarded materials, it should be ensured that the use of plastic bags is avoided so also excessive use of packaging materials.
A good energy-efficient home should make optimum use of the surrounding environment and should be able to adapt to the local climate. An ideal energy-efficient home is one that makes the best possible use of sunlight. Those living in a tropical climate can consider reducing the extent of sunlight entering the house through windows either by extending the roofs or even better by natural shade like trees.
An energy efficient home should have proper ventilation so that breeze across the rooms due to cross ventilation can keep the rooms cool. This way one can eliminate the need for air conditioners or other equipment that consume a lot of electricity.
Extending this concept, one can minimize the dependence on electrical equipment for heating the rooms by ensuring more sunlight into the rooms and in such homes the need for electrical lighting can also be minimized. Insulation is very important to maintain temperatures at desired levels daily in all climates.
There is no use of sunshine heating the rooms during the day, if all the heat gets dissipated soon after sunset due to poor insulation. It is advisable to purchase materials required for building the home from local markets rather than importing from different parts of the world as this will reduce shipping costs. Additionally, the design of the house will match better with its surroundings, if it is constructed using local materials. All these steps are meant to make the home more energy efficient by minimizing the consumption of energy.
