Business cards are one of the most fundamental tools used when it comes to building up contacts and networking in the world of work. Whether a business is just starting out and looking to forge strong working relationships, or it is a long-established first carrying out deals and transactions and growing a client base, one of the most important things a business can do is get out into the world and meet people face to face. As well as making a good first impression when meeting professional contacts, it is just as crucial to leave a good impression with them, in the form of a professionally produced business card.

Business cards can vary from the functional to the funny, depending on the impression that the person who commissions their printing wishes to convey. For example, some people want to create an air of formality and professionalism, so they may choose to simply print their name, job title and contact details on their business card, alongside a corporate logo. However, those of a more quirky disposition or those who may be in the creative industries may wish to add a little personality to their business card by including a relevant quotation or opting for a bright colour or bespoke design.

Best practice recommendations for business card creation

1. Decide on a message that will be relevant for a long timer
When having business cards printed, it is often more cost-effective to buy a large print run of cards as opposed to a smaller one. If this cost-effective route is chosen, it is worth making sure that the message on the cards will not change before your cards run out, to avoid numerous reprints. In a similar vein, people may keep a business card for a number of months or even years so it is always beneficial to use details that are unlikely to change so that people can reach you down the line.

2. Always use a reputable print company to produce your business cards

A business card is a lasting memento of the first impression on a new contact, so it is extremely important that any business cards that are handed out give a good impression. A professional print company will be able to produce business cards quickly and efficiently and to a high standard. Bespoke designs and logos can be added during the printing process, as can various fonts or colours. A professional finish can also be added to business cards, helping to leave the right impression with potential clients.

3. Double and triple-check before printingr
Before you send your business card request to the printer, ensure that you have every detail correct. Double and triple-check that all spellings, casing, phone numbers and web addresses are correct. Many people also opt to add other details such as social networking web addresses, so as well as checking the spelling for these elements are correct, make sure you also test the web link by typing it into a browser. Business cards are a great way to link the online and offline world and are an essential tool for face-to-face networking, so it is important that your card gives out your correct details.
