Double Glazed windows have become the very fabric of our homes. They are now so much a part of house construction and home improvement we rarely give a thought to the huge and varied benefits of double glazing. It is almost taken as read that if you can afford them it goes without saying they make a house a home.
But double glazing offers much more than huge savings on fuel bills, and reducing the chill factor from old battered windows. It offers more than just securing that draft that has been playing on your neck through the winter months, and in this article I want to go through the many facets of double glazing installation that we all regularly enjoy but sadly too often take for granted.

Extra Security

Single panes of windows are easier to break, they are more vulnerable. It is more likely a burglar will target a home without double glazed windows for that reason alone. Double glazed units come with laminated or toughened glass reducing the chance of shattering. Often damage to one pane is not carried through to the second pane therefore giving a much higher degree of safety. Taking security even further a reputable double glazing firm will offer high security frames and locking systems.

Green Efficiency

Technology continues to move forward and the modern low-emissivity glass allows the sun rays heat into the room but at the same time prevents heat escaping from the room. Apart from huge savings that are incurred on fuel bills, and the fact that a much more comfortable environment is created for the family protected from inclement weather, this obviously has a green benefit too. The more warm we are in our homes, the less energy we are using and less is leaking out into the atmosphere unnecessarily. It has been estimated that a quarter of heat is lost through traditional windows in our homes.

Condensation and damp

If you are lucky enough to have double glazing installed you will never have the problem of condensation. But with traditional windows it can make the environment inside the home cold damp and generally unhealthy. Constant mopping up is needed in winter months to reduce the amount of water on the windows.

Noise

Consumers who have just bought double glazed windows often report a wonderful silence. They suddenly notice the amount of traffic noise and hustle and bustle that had seemed quite normal suddenly disappears – or is greatly reduced. There is a new privacy to their homes and a new freedom (the kids can scream a lot louder too!).

Increases the value of your home

This is a real investment in many ways. Apart form the substantial positive effect on home life and the huge reduction in fuel costs the installation of the units will undoubtedly increase the resale and aesthetic value of your home.
