Businesses in varying industries accumulate accounts receivable balances during the course of their business operations. Many organizations have difficulty collecting significant portions of these receivable balances and write them off over time as bad debt. Although delays in collection of receivables occur for many reasons, and the timing of collections is dependent on both the industry and economic climate that the business and their customers are operating, businesses can improve their collection process by obtaining the help of a professional debt collection agency.

A professional debt collection agency is contracted by a business and pursues outstanding accounts receivable balances. If the debt collection agency collects the balance, they typically receive a commission for the collection of the receivable. Keep in mind that compensation for the debt collection agency may vary, but they will only collect money for themselves if they collect money for you. Many commercial customers choose when to pay their vendors or suppliers in order to manage their cash flow effectively and pursuing these receivables through a debt collection agency often speeds up the repayment process. In addition, employees at commercial companies often want to avoid being contacted by collection agencies so they will make payments to vendors who use these companies more quickly than for other vendors who do not use these agencies.

Medical offices often have difficulty collecting outstanding receivable balances from customers. This is particularly true of dentist offices as patients visit dentists infrequently and may choose not to pay their outstanding balance until they are ready for their next appointment. Dental debt collection services pursue these outstanding balances and request repayment from customers. By pursuing these dental services exte
ally through a collection agency as opposed to internally through the dentist office’s staff, a dentist office often avoids negative confrontations with customers and often improves the rate of collections from customers.

Debt collection agencies are often more successful at collecting from a customer due to their experience in collecting outstanding balances and their ability to pursue outstanding balances through legal channels in a more efficient manner than a normal business can. This is primarily due to economies of scale in regards to legal services. The more frequently you utilize legal services, the cheaper it becomes to pursue legal actions to collect outstanding balances. Many debt collection agencies maintain internal legal counsel, which allows them to pursue legal action without incurring additional legal costs.

In addition, the employees of debt collection agencies are trained to use tactics to convince individuals or businesses with outstanding balances to repay the receivables quickly. Sometimes discounts are used as an incentive for prompt payment and other times other rewards or bonuses are used as a way of obtaining quick payment. Other times discussions are made in regards to the impact that non-payment may have on the credit history of the debtor. Although owners are able to use similar methods of improving collection of outstanding balances, owners spend time running their organizations and devoting significant amounts of time to collecting outstanding balances often lead to a distraction for these business owners that may hamper their ability to run their business. In addition, customer relations may be harmed by a business pursuing collections internally. A debt collection agency can pursue collections of outstanding balances in a way that limits harm caused to the customer relationship due to the collection process. As such, there are many advantages to using debt collection agencies to collect outstanding receivables that can lead to improved cash flow and lower bad debt write-offs over time.
