There are many forms of a bacterial yeast infection but one of the most common forms of a candida infection effect up to 75% of the women in the United States. A yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis may be similar with their symptoms. However treatment of these two types of infections couldn't be more different.
Bacterial vaginosis used to be referred to as Gardnerella vaginitis. This is because the bacterium that usually causes this infection is Gardnerella.
Now a yeast infection is exactly what it sounds like an overgrowth of yeast. It is actually a fungal infection caused by candida. There are different types of candida infections, candida albicans is variety that causes problems for women.
Your body has a natural flora which is a combination of several things like your immune system and "good" bacteria. Anytime time this flora becomes unbalanced or disturbed it makes you vulnerable to getting an infection.
You might get new yeast introduced into your body in some way or you could be taking antibiotics. Antibiotics are probably the number one cause for getting either one of these infections. Even though antibiotics kill the "bad" bacteria in your body they accidentally kill the "good" bacteria as well, leaving you unable to fight off an infection.
A candida infection or yeast infection can be sexually transmitted between partners, I found that out with my husband the hard way. However bacterial vaginosis cannot be transmitted back and forth.
Men can have a mild yeast infection and pass it on to you if left untreated. It is not uncommon for men to experience little to no symptoms of a yeast infection and just be a carrier.
Symptoms of a yeast infection are a vaginal white discharge that could be light to heavy with the consistency of cottage cheese. So women have described it like crumbly blue cheese.
You should experience soreness around the vagina with quite a lot of itchiness. Other symptoms may include painful urination and pain during intercourse.
Thrush, athlete’s foot, or skin candida infections if left untreated can escalate to more serious candida infections like digestive track, intestinal all the way to a systemic yeast infection. Candida can really cause you problems if you continue to ignore an infection.
If candida enters your blood stream it is considered a systemic yeast infection, this is bad. Now a systemic yeast infection is rare but it can happen if you continue to ignore an infection. A systemic candida infection will wreak havoc on you internal organs maybe even start shutting them down.
You want to kill all the candida in your entire body for any type of yeast infection. This is the only way to be sure you have performed a permanent cure and won't be dealing with another infection soon. Over the counter yeast infection treatments only cure your symptoms and do not fix the root of the problem.
