The Borough of Enfield, now part of Outer London, is the most northern borough of London. It borders with other London Boroughs of Haringey, Barnet and Waltham Forest in addition to the counties of Hertfordshire and Essex. Enfield's history dates back to 1086, where the Domesday Book recorded a place called 'Enefelde'; the 'feld' being an area of cleared trees amidst woodland, today known as Enfield Chase. Enfield town was formerly a little market town in Middlesex County but since the expansion of London has become a London suburb and commuter town. Several old buildings remain in Enfield town including Enfield Grammar School's Tudor Old Hall, next to the church and town market place. The school building dates back to 1586. Enfield is a town with considerable input to worldwide industry development. The first mass-produced dishwasher by Hotpoint and world's first colour televisions by Ferguson were manufactured in former Enfield plants. The world's first cash machine opened in Enfield too, in 1967 at Barclays Bank. The town also has a history of armaments manufacture, including production of the Lee-Enfield .303 rifle, used as standard by the British Army up to 1957. The town today is modern and fresh, having undergone a complete redevelopment in 2007. Enfield boasts a large retail area now sprawling beyond the original Palace Gardens Shopping Centre and has two multi-storey car parks. Edmonton Green is on-going in its development and in addition to its new housing, hosts a good range of shops, leisure outlets, health facilities and numerous other civic amenities. Further shopping centres are situated in the western sector of the town, in Palmers Green, Cockfosters and Southgate. Around Enfield's A10 road are plenty of local activities and areas of entertainment. A large Cineworld complex and retail outlets are all easily accessible from the town centre. The town has an excellent transport network, with good rail links into London and other surrounding towns. The Piccadilly Line of the London Underground serves Enfield, with stations at Oakwood, Arnos Grove and Southgate. The bus services, operated by Transport for London and running throughout the borough, are also impressive. Main roads providing access to and across Enfield include the M25, the North Circular Road, the old Hertford Road and the previously mentioned A10. The Borough of Enfield has a number of museums including Forty Hall Manor, the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture and Capel Manor Garden Exhibitions. The gardens at Forty Hall lie in an estate of 273 acres of grounds and woodlands, all managed by the town borough. Enfield Borough is fortunate to have more than 123 open spaces and parks, with an abundance of sports facilities, playgrounds and golf courses. The parks include Bury Lodge Gardens, Albany Park, Ryan's Park and Beech Hill Park, in Hadley Wood. In addition to all these open spaces, the borough also has two prominent reservoirs; William Girling and King George V, known collectively as Chingford Reservoirs. They are located near to the River Lea, on the eastern side of Enfield Borough. Enfield is a borough that looks after its younger generation. There are many movements and organisations providing activities for children and young adults. Some of the most popular activities include Scouts, Guides, the Girls' and Boys' Brigades and the Air Training Corps.
