Thoroughbred horse training and care takes a lot of money, time, and love on the part of the human beings employed to try to make him/her a champion. In general, primary care for a racing thoroughbred is the responsibility of the veterinarian, the trainer, the groom, and the stable hands.
Stable hands may have the most menial duties of the people caring for the horse like tidying the stable yards and pastures, mucking out the stalls, and attending races, but they are fundamental to any horse racing operation, and are a great help in getting the horse used to being in the company of human beings. The stable hands are the people that spend the most time around the horse since they work long, hard hours, and can form a strong bond with the horse.

The groom has overlapping duties with the stable hands, and also spends much more time with the horse than anybody else. A groom establishes a bond with the horse, helps out with bedding and cleaning out the stalls, and also trains himself to be sensitive to the horse’s needs. Observational skills are a must, as a groom will check the hooves constantly to make sure there are no cracks or other problems, and will also check for any changes in the horse’s general demeanor. Changes of this type could be a sign of health problems which would require the veterinarian to be notified. After a race, a groom will wash the horse down and walk the horse to calm it down as well.
The veterinarian is crucial in the care of a thoroughbred as it is the vet who is responsible for diagnosing and treating the horse for a variety of ailments. Sometimes a horse can have hoof or leg problems that need surgery, and only the vet can make the determination between rest or surgery.
Finally, the trainer of a thoroughbred is the one responsible for his exercise and racing regiment. There is no one way to train a horse, and trainers have got to be dedicated craftsman willing to put in long hours with their horses. They must understand horse psychology in order to communicate effectively with their horse so it can reach it’s peak performance. Some horses have a tendency to be lazy. Others are temperamental, requiring deft handling. Some horses are lethargic, others can’t seem to want to get enough exercise. A horse like that must be held back in workouts because a trainer wants to make sure the horse isn’t so tired from his workouts that he is slow in the race.
Molding a thoroughbred into a champion race horse is a time consuming affair that takes years of hard work and patience, and with a bit of luck, everyone involved, from the owner all the way down to the stable hands, can share in a champion’s glory!
