The heart serves as a vehicle for blood to be circulated around the body. With age the heart grows weak, if not handled with care the heart is prone to heart failure. The differences that occur between the left and right side failure are due to the fact that blood enters the heart through the right side and then is sent to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The left side is then used to pump the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body, to once again return to the heart after being relived of its oxygen content. Senior citizens are highly susceptible to heart disease as it can occur from long term weakening of the heart. Other diseases such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes can also contribute to heart failure. Heart failure does not mean that the heart has stopped pumping blood to the body, but is characterized as an insufficient amount of blood reaching the heart and the rest of the body. It is a serious disease, some specific disorders categorized under heart failure are: • Left side heart failure- lower amounts of blood are pumped out of the heartrn• Right side heart failure- this affects the heart’s capacity to fill with blood and pump blood to the lungs. Some symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, and fluid build-up in the feet, legs liver, abdomen, and sometimes in the veins and neck. Making healthy lifestyle choices is an extremely important factor for everyone, but it is exceptionally important for senior citizens to actively maintain their health at their respective age. Following a healthy eating plan is an extremely important factor for heart failure treatment. A diet low in salt, fat, trans fat, cholesterol is highly beneficial as salt can cause extra fluid buildup in the body, high cholesterol can further damage blood cells and heart functioning, and trans fat can increase bad cholesterol in the blood. Avoiding junk foods is important as they are high in cholesterol. Some doctors recommend limiting fluid intake and abstain from alcohol completely. Adopting healthy habits plays an integral part in the fight against heart disease. Maintaining a healthy weight, participating in safe amount of physical activity, getting enough rest, avoiding unhealthy habits all play a part in healthy living.
