There has always been plenty of career opportunities for international students in the UK. However, as new updates and laws are due to be introduced, it could present new challenges to foreign students looking to remain in the country.

Here, we’ll look at some of the challenges international students are facing in the UK job market.

The new visa rules

The UK is the second most popular destination for international students. In 2017 to 2018, 20% of all higher education students in the UK were international students. The main thing that attracted them was the quality of life and great job opportunities upon graduating. However, the new visa rules could soon change that.

Prior to Brexit, international students were free to use their student visa for up to two years after they had completed their studies. This gave them plenty of time to find a job. However, under new rules, they will now have just four months to stay in the country unless they acquire a work visa.

Another change is the introduction of salary limits. Up until now, after graduating international students could accept any job to stay in the country. However, now for the new work visa they will need to earn a minimum of £20,800.

Those who are wishing to stay in the UK after completing their degree may find it beneficial to seek legal advice. Immigration experts Withers can aid students in applying for required visas, as well as advise them on their rights.

Finding a job

One of the main challenges international students will now face in light of changing rules, is finding a job. There are several barriers that will make it more difficult to do this, including the time limit, competition and visa sponsorship acceptance.

As the UK is now in the midst of the worst recession it’s ever seen, unemployment has soared. This means it is going to be even harder for international students to secure a job if they are completing their studies soon. With increased competition for positions, finding a job within the timeframe required could prove extremely difficult.

It isn’t just a case of finding any job either. International students also need to find a job that accepts visa sponsorship. In the light of the changes introduced through Brexit, many companies are reluctant to accept visa sponsorships right now. So, the reduced four-month period to find a job is certainly going to prove challenging for students.

Students who are concerned about their visa requirements should seek the help of a professional lawyer. They will be able to advise you of your options, particularly if you want to remain in the country for longer than four months.

There are a lot of opportunities for international students still in the UK. However, if you’re planning on coming to study and then work in the country, you need to be aware of the challenges ahead. Only by being prepared can you aim to overcome the challenges and land your dream job.
