The article displayed looks at how the Victorian conservatory started and how it has changed over the past few century’s. rnConservatories are usually buildings that have around 50% of glazed walls and the roof is about 75% and is a glazed translucent material that can be glass or polycarbonate sheets. Terms such as conservatories and sunrooms are alternately used by the public but generally refer to the original lavish Victorian conservatories. In the 16th century conservatories evolved because of rich land owners that wanted to grow oranges and lemons. Pre-conservatory structures had already been in use in Italy - the crudely made pergola were built to store and preserve citrus and other tender plants, mainly during the winter months. Wooden panels were the material they used to make the structures that sheltered from the cold weather. In the early 19th century, conservatories became noticeable as greenhouses most noticeably in European cities so that home owners would be able to grow tropical crops and plants in the harsh climate that Europe has. Citizens were beginning to use conservatories as extensions by the end of the 19th century for social use like tea parties. Victorian conservatories and greenhouses have survived to the present day because there architectural style is still considered new such as designs like geodesic domes. Rare structures called orangeries were built to store delicate oranges in northern areas of Europe. These enclosed structures were usually from wood, brick or stone and contained tall vertical windows on the south walls. Through the years many other fruits were used in these buildings until the time came when they were eventually used for socialising, leisure and entertainment. At around this time the term greenhouse began to be used to describe conservatories specifically used for storing plants and vegetables. By the 18th century the greenhouse had evolved into their more modern counterparts using sloping glass sheets in order to bring in more sunlight for the plants. Finally the 19th century became the golden era for rnconservatories, particularly in England where new methods for glass production were being invented and there was much public interest in gardening and plant cultivation.rnThe production of conservatories came to a standstill in world war 2 but the development of sunrooms flourished within the 1950s and 1960s because of insulted glass. Conservatories became popular again during the 1970s and continued to the present day, with architects mostly recreating the classic Victorian conservatory style. If you love interior design and like to put a modern twist to your home decor then you need Victorian conservatories.
