The dental curing light is a type of light that has been designed to help cure resins rapidly. This device is mainly used in the dental industry. The curing light is used to ensure the complete setting of the fillings, adhesives and sealants i.e. composites that are used in a variety of dental procedures. The light waves produced by a curing lamp start a change within the composite thus enabling it to harden and bond with the tooth. This therefore makes the curing process quicker and a patient can leave the dentist's office without having to worry about damaging the filling. Some of the curing lamp types available in the market include the LED, plasma, laser, and halogen varieties.

A curing light usually accomplishes two things; the lamp is used to ensure that the resin cures properly and that it adheres to the tooth evenly. The dental curing light also helps to limit the risks of sealants cracking as well as the occurrence of other problems associated with sealants. With regards to adhesives, the curing lamp helps to ensure the even curing of implants and braces so as to curtail any problems in the future. A dental curing light is also known to increase the comfort of patients by curing resins rapidly. Given that the mouth has to be opened wide during these procedures it is therefore the wish of every patient that the operation ends as quickly as possible. Using a curing lamp ensures that patients will not be required to sit in discomfort for a long time as the resin sets.

Although a dental curing light is not dangerous in any way, it is important for dentists to take some precautions when using this device. For instance, it is advisable for a dental practitioner and the patient to wear some form of eye protection when using a curing light. It is also important for a dental practitioner to ensure that the light produced by the curing lamp is not excessively powerful because some of these curing lamps generate heat that is hot enough to cause burns. On that note, it is also important for a dental practitioner to buy a dental curing light that produces the least amount of heat during a procedure. Additionally, it is imperative for a dental practitioner to understand the exact curing lamp wavelength that a particular resin responds to because each resin has unique requirements.

Lastly, it is important for any dental practitioner to stay abreast with the new developments in this field. Dental resins keep changing and it is imperative that one uses the appropriate curing light.
