Recent natural calamities have caused power shortages around the globe, and never has it been more important to have an alternate power source than right now. Power generators are probably the best solution available and come in various types to suit individual power requirements. Here, we take a look at the various generator options and how they work.
Power generators are also known as electric generators and work by converting mechanical power into electrical energy. The generator has two parts- namely, the motor- which produces power for the generator by burning some kind of fuel; and the generator head- that converts power to electricity via electromagnetic induction.
Power generators are used for several different purposes. The most common include, powering household lights and appliances, batteries, machines and other electrical equipment. They can also be used to provide temporary power to places that have no electricity.
Power generators are suitable for households as well as businesses, and come in various varieties to suit either purpose. Today, there are two main generator types available, and while both serve the same purpose; they may be obtained in different designs and sizes as well as with separate features and functions.
The first type of power generator is also known as a standby generator. They are bulky, powerful and often available at a high cost. Because of their size and weight; they are usually installed in a fixed position outside the venue where power is required. These may be connected with a gas line or liquid propane tank for continued operation without electrical power. The standby generator is typically used to guard against potential damaging effects of a power outage in places that rely on electricity for critical use.
The generator is wired to the main electrical system in the area with the help of an automatic transfer switch. This enables the machine to turn on automatically in case of a power cut. The features and functions of a standby generator makes it the ideal alternate power source for businesses, large residential buildings and also, hospitals that need power to keep their life support systems functional. Shopping centers or malls rely on the same to keep perishable goods from getting damaged.
A portable generator is another type of power generator and differs greatly from their standby counterparts. For starters; they are much smaller in size, and designed so to be easily transportable from one location to the next. They have been specifically created to supply power to construction sites, forest clearings or other areas that do not have access to electricity. However, they are now being used by independent households as well, to help provide enough power for home appliances during a power cut. Unfortunately, these power generators can only provide electricity for a few hours at a time and do not turn on or off automatically. The owner has to do it manually instead.
So go ahead and pick an electric generator that best suits your requirements. The many options available, guarantee that you’ll find a perfect machine.
