For forty years the pharmacy profession has been moving from dispensing medications to providing certain medical services. Prominent growth in prescription drug use and expenses, debate around a Medicare drug benefit, direct-to-consumer drug promotion, benefits of new pharmacotherapeutics and quality and safety concerns have focused superior awareness on pharmaceutical care. These factors also have contributed to an increased require for pharmacists, the third-largest health specific group and the sole profession particularly trained to deliver pharmaceutical services.

The 2000 national pharmacist personnel study described a dynamic shortage of pharmacists characterized by a rapid and persistent rise in demand for services that outpaced the level supplied by pharmacists. This shortage developed despite stable growth in pharmacist supply. The striking direction growth, coupled with a modest supply increase, led to a dramatic increase in pharmacists workloads.

Over the past forty years the pharmacy profession has extended its role beyond dispensing medications to include more clinical functions. This shift has been supported by the improved clinical education required for the doctor of pharmacy, or PharmD, degree, which will replace the baccalaureate degree as the required entry-level degree. Shifting from a provision focus to a patient focus has been mainly challenging in community and retail pharmacies. Development in the past five years has included offering expanded patient counseling, immunizations, and medication-dependent disease management for persons with certain unceasing conditions.

Overall to sum up, the pharmacy technician’s task is to make sure that proper records are maintained along with managing the dispensary to ensure the safety of the patients.
