Hives is basically an allergic reaction in which pale or red colored velts appear on the skin. The allergy bears a striking resemblance to a mosquito bite and keeps on changing in shape, size and even locations. Its symptoms are more likely to occur in children than in adults and can cause the victim a great deal of discomfort and irritation. And even though it is harmless, excessive scratching of the affected part can lead to rashes or cuts. So it is advised that you treat hives at the earliest. In this article, we give tips on treating children who suffer from hives symptoms.

The actual cause that triggers hives is yet unclear. However it is believed that allergic reactions to certain kinds of food and medications can lead to the condition. Tight fitting clothes, temperature changes and unhygienic conditions are also believed to cause its onset. Most hive symptoms are known to disappear of their own accord but in a few it worsens leaving the person with severe itchiness.

So these are some of the things that you can do to counter hives: Keep note of your child’s diet and observe if eating certain kinds of food is leading to such a reaction. Allergy testing at a reputed clinic can also help you decipher the cause behind your child’s symptoms. Hives is believed to be caused by the chemical histamine, so the logical sense is to treat it with anti-histamine medications. These include treating them with medications such as Loratidine, Benadryl or Claritin. However it is recommended that you take these only after having consulted with an expert.

Homemade remedies can also help you to get rid of hives. You can brew leaves and bark of rosemary leaves or red Alder and serve it as tea to the child. The disease can leave the child at his tether’s end, so make him or her as comfortable as possible. Make them lie in bed, cover the child with comfortable sheets and regulate the temperature of the room because hives symptoms can aggravate if it is too hot or too cold. The child should also be made to wear loose comfortable clothing, preferably cottons that can easily absorb sweat from the body. Bathing the child under a cool shower will also provide them with much needed relief. Also prevent the child from scratching too much because it may lead to the allergy spreading to other parts of the body.

If there are no signs of improvement even after 2-3 weeks, then seek the guidance of medical expert. Hives in general doesn’t require treatment but if ever your child contracts one, then follow these tips to eliminate the problem.
