The highly successful players in the IT space are those who can adapt to the violent changes. With a plenty of technical talent and a large installed base, it is imprudent to count VMware out because the enterprise customers who have embraced its server virtualization tools contemplate how they want to develop gradually to something that seems more like what a hyperscaler would build. Many organizations have come across these moments but here is perhaps a relevant parallel. The vaunted mainframe business of IBM successfully reacted to the onslaught of minicomputers in the early 1980s lead by the Digital Equipment. When Unix systems took off in the late 1980s, IBM jumped into Unix inspite of the cannibalization of its mini and mainframe computer lines and after many years of being an also-ran against the Hewlett packard and Sun Microsystems, Big Blue had put itself on a hostile technology roadmap and finished aggressively to win the lion’s share of Unix market. VMware has brilliantly built a base of five lakh users of its vSphere and ESXi hypervisor management tools for the purpose of server virtualization and it has embraced both the Docker containers and OpenStack cloud controller on the top of ESXi with vSphere Integrated Containers (VIC) and vSphere Integrated OpenStack (VIO) and even it has Unix system analog that it owns for the purpose of containerized data center known as Photon Platform for the purpose of greenfield installations where the VMware shops desire to move away from the server virtualization to possess a clear-slate container environment. Get vmware online training to understand the difference between virtualization and Containerization. The former VIC and VIO enable VMware to maintain its ESXi base that has been installed by weaving the actual Docker and OpenStack code around the hypervisor while Photon Platform enables VMware to generate a new virtualization substrate for the platform clouds and containers that provides it something to sell to the ones who are looking out for other alternatives to the server virtualization - generally open source - that are emerging, like stacks depending on Docker Swarm, Kubernetes and Mesos. VIC’s first version was announced as a public beta beginning in the third quarter after a run of private betas in order to harden the code a bit, VMware is aiding the Docker APIs and can run Docker images as the virtual machines on top of the ESXi 6.0 and higher. This container-on-VM approach has issues. Viewing what is running in a VM, which usually has many containers is not trivial. VMs assume that they have an OS, but not a container with code snippets. Just sizing the VMs to run various numbers and kinds of containers is quite difficult; customers get this wrong, and this is precisely the kind of thing that must be automated. And finally, as these containers are configured statically on the VMs that are locked in size and place because of the configurations needed by the containers, if there is extra capacity, you do not know it and cannot reclaim it easily. It defeats the motive of virtualization, that is to leave no bit of bandwidth, no byte of memory and no clock of CPU unused if possible. This explains the embrace and extends strategy of VMware. Various new innovations are coming up in this area day-by-day due to which the job opportunities are increasing rapidly in this field. Many IT professionals are taking VMware training and choosing this field as it offers a great future for the people who are looking for a career in virtualization.
