The plan includes up to twenty minutes of intense interval training, done for up to three days per week. During the exercises, Poulos recommends using as much resistance as the body is able to handle. If the body is brought to the point that no more weight can be lifted, the breakdown of muscle tissue will be significant. Then, during the seventy-two hours after the workout, the body will exert energy to repair muscle tissue. Adding muscle helps the body to burn more calories. For every pound of additional muscle added, experts estimate that the body burns fifty extra calories per hour. That fifty extra calories per hour adds up to 1,200 calories per day, and 8,400 calories per week. Building muscle, according to Poulos, is the key to increasing the body's metabolic rate, and facilitating weight loss. Another component of FBF is nutritional advice. Eating the correct carbs, fats, proteins, vegetables, and fruits is more important than deprivation. Poulos recommends, for example, that dieters eat carbohydrates from complex whole grains. He also recommends eating the right fats, including fish, extra virgin olive oil, avocados, flax oil and seeds, and nut butters. Poulos also offers advice on proteins, vegetables, and fruits. Dieters, for every pound of body weight, should consume about 0.04 grams of protein. When eating vegetables, dieters should stick to green beans, asparagus, broccoli, and dark leafy greens. Regarding fruit, Poulos recommends melons, bananas, apples, and berries. According to most nutritionists, dieters should try to lose no more than two pounds weekly. By claiming to eliminate twenty-six pounds within seven weeks, FBF claims a weight loss of approximately 3.71 pounds per week. Getting weight to disappear quickly may appeal to many dieters, but many dieters who lose weight rapidly also gain the weight back rapidly. Fast weight loss may produce irritating and dangerous side effects. Irritability, headaches, menstrual irregularities, and fatigue are some minor side effects associated with too-quick weight loss. More severe side effects include dehydration, gallstones, electrolyte imbalances, and malnutrition. The longer a dieter stays on a rapid weight reduction plan, the more likely the dieter is to experience some of these side effects. Before embracing all of the techniques in the fat burning furnace program, dieters should discuss the plan with their physician. Also, dieters should not neglect cardiovascular exercise, which benefits the body in many ways, in addition to promoting healthy weight. Poulos and his wife, however, lost forty pounds and sixty pounds respectively, by following the principles of FBF.
