Believe it or not our bosses, supervisors and superiors do have the best of intentions in their own job performance and how we feel about how they do their job. However result and goal oriented their actions may be, they still must possess the art of tact. As Publilius Syrus states ‘A Wise Man will be the Master of His Mind, a Fool will be its Slave’. Small words can motivate the masses; such is the art of a successful business owner or manager. Here is a collection of some of the best things your boss has ever said to you-hopefully!

• Don’t worry, it will be handled.
Feeling as though the whole company is relying on you to work continuous over-time hours, interfering with personal or familial obligations and running you into the ground as you know is not the best way to produce results. Knowing that you have a team of support and others that are happily and able to assist you with your workload is a huge weight lifted and creates a community involvement atmosphere amongst the staff. As a business owner you should avoid getting burned by the burn out.

• You have been working so hard, why don’t you take a day off or work from home for a day.
Having flexibility and acknowledging that your employees are humans and not robots will produce constructive results. Having a revived and reinvigorated employee is more valuable than a weeks’ worth of average. You may just be pleasantly surprised by the amount of work that is accomplished from your employee while they are working from home in their PJ’s!

• Great job! You were directly responsible for a 40% increase in revenue this month! (e.g.)
Having the information needed is half of the battle, it’s what you do with it that counts. Citing specific accomplishments and contributions and their effects or meaning to the company is invaluable. By directly addressing a person’s involvement and responsibility using positive reinforcement, a task force mentality is incited. Psychologically speaking we remember only one third of the positive statements we hear, make sure your employee is rewarded verbally or otherwise, however small the achievement may seem to you.

• You are so talented, what else are you good at?
Praise not only feels good, it can do great things to inspire and motivate a person. Giving credit where you feel it’s due can also be reciprocal. Keeping in mind that your employees are also human, they take time to do what they enjoy outside of the office. Determining what their talents and hobbies may be is advantageous not just for personality reasons, but taking into consideration that there may be a skill set or forte than can be utilized in the workplace.

Communication and collaboration are the key elements on the dynamic corporation scientific table. Placing priority on each individual’s feedback and contributions and eliciting unbiased, courageous commentary and observation from your workforce is simply drawing from the fountain of knowledge available to you.
