A wise leader who lived around 1000 BC once declared “Teach me your ways … that I may live according to your truth!” The author of those words had not lived according to the truth that he had been taught at the hands of his parents. In fact the record shows that even though he had become very successful, even rising to be the king of his people, he had forgotten the truth. This lapse of memory or deliberate turning away from the tried and true path resulted in committing acts of murder, adultery and deceit that are recorded for all mankind to remember and learn!
The reality is we have not learned and often we forget our past unwilling to learn from it and doomed to repeat it. It becomes clearer everyday that we are not moving in the direction of fulfilling the dreams our forefathers had for our world. Their dream included a world that would know truth, live by it and pass it on to the next generation. Instead it would seem we are facing a future that is doomed to repeat our past mistakes on a global scheme.
I am not advocating that we try to ‘turn the clock back’ or in some other way force anyone to adhere to a certain code of behaviour or follow a set of doctrines deemed to be the only truth. What I am coming to realize is that there is only one way for anyone to truly find the truth. It is not from being told, convinced, cajoled or brain washed! The only way to find truth is from the inside out.
I come back to that famous man from the ancient past who was seeking truth. He did not find it from the wise counsel of his advisers, the religious leaders of his nation or from some self-help course. His revelation came, at least from my perspective, from taking a long journey into his soul and capturing a glimpse of the future. He saw a future in which he would have to give account for his actions both good and bad. It was this scene that caused him to cry out “Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth.”
The future cannot be a repeat of the past or we are all doomed to experience life without hope, purpose or value. Is there something that we can do – that I can do to ensure a better future? Let’s take that same inner journey of the soul and see where it leads us!
