The Great Resistance to Healing

As I have stated many times, healing begins and occurs when a change in the pattern of a person’s life changes. This is a major shift in attitude, when the entire person decides to start anew. The person feels a shift, an epiphany and from that moment on, things are different. Working one on one with a person, this shift occurs easily and quickly and it occurs on the 2nd to 4th session.
Part of therapy is to eliminate or bypass resistance. Healing and being healthy is a pattern that already exists within a person, it is already there and available, it already exists, it just needs to be turned on.
How do you turn it on?
• You must have a strong desire and a powerful reason – to be healthy.
• You must be aware of the immense cost and pain if you do not change.
• You must be willing to change.
• You must decide to change.

There is one major hurdle and it is the resistance to change. This resistance to change is what prevents most people from healing from cancer. It is the reason why most people (nearly all) are looking for something to cure their cancer. The equation is, that they want to be the same but not have the cancer. They do not want to change the pattern and yet it is the pattern that is responsible for the cancer. Once again – healing occurs when the pattern is changed!

We as human beings mistakenly believe that if we change, then we won’t be ourselves. The other night, I was watching an interview with Mike Tyson, ex heavyweight world champion boxer on TV. At the end of the interview the interviewer asked Mike, who had a notorious life, “looking back, if you had the chance, would you change anything?” Mike thought for a while and said “No, if I did then I wouldn’t be me!” Ironically the interview was about how Mike’s life has changed recently from bad guy to good guy.

This statement/belief of ‘if I change then I won’t be me’ is incorrect. Because you believe it to be true then of course you will not be prepared or willing to change. When you change, it is the pattern that changes. The pattern is the blueprint, instructions for how you operate and behave but it is not you. Most people believe that they are their behaviors and that simply is not true. Your behavior and self image etc feels like it is you because it is automatic (that is it operates according to the unconscious pattern). It is this identification and attachment to your self image, behavior and pattern that prevents healing and maintains the status quo.

What will it take for you to be willing to dis-identify with your pattern/self image/behaviors?
When you become aware of the total pain and cost of the existing pattern/self image/behaviors and you realize, if you change (your life pattern) you will still be you, though much healthier and happier.

With a respectful and person-centred approach, personal care can enhance wellbeing while honouring an individual’s sense of self. The foundation of dignified care is built on trust, communication, and
