This article is about the history of the radio. How it all started from the transmitting of waves and ended up in live radio play. The innovation of technology always been shaping things to provide more convenience to the human being in his or her daily life. Invention In the early 1800s when everyone was keen to invent something, people were thinking to develop something that required no wire in communication. Everyone was coming with different ideas, but no one could make it work. In the 1830s, various experiments were made to make this wonder happen. They tried transmitting through the ground, water, railway tracks and what not. However, in 1864, James Clerk Maxwell first proposed the idea of transmitting the message through electromagnetic waves. rnHe supported his debate with theoretical and mathematical solutions. Around 1880, David Edward Hughes is considered as the first who broadcast a signal internationally following Maxwell's idea, electromagnetism. 1888 was the year when the experiments were successfully conducted to confirm Maxwell's theory by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz. The phenomenon was called Hertzian waves, and it almost took 20 years to develop the name radio. Many scientists stepped forward to carry experiments on the wireless system to converts it into a system of communication. Some preferred working on the Hertzian waves and some did not. William Crookes proposed the idea of wire it into a system of communication. Some preferable working on the Hertzian waves and some did not. William Crookes proposed the idea of wireless telegraphy by using Hertzian waves in 1892. And in 1893, Nikola Tesla made a system that would telegraph using earth as a medium for transmitting the waves. However, more components were developed over time utilizing Maxwell's theory for electromagnetic waves. 1894 was the time when Guglielmo Marconi stepped in by building a first complete system for wireless telegraphy in commercial use based on the Hertzian waves. He proposed the importance of the idea of intra or inter military communications around the world. 19th Century The word Radio replaced Hertzian waves. James Clerk Maxwell was the base theory for many future discoveries or invention in the world. After the invention of the wireless telegraph, Marconi was very determined in inventing a device that could help in communicating using radio waves. In August 1895, he came up with the invention of transmitting the signals through radio waves. Despite the signals being not transmitted as per his calculations in 1894, it was a significant invention in the history of humankind. And no one at knew at the time that it would change the course of action in the coming future. He invented an antenna to make communications possible around the places at more distance. The higher the antenna, the more range it could cover. In 1896, Marconi was awarded his first patent. In 1897, he made a radio station for commercial use in England. In 1898, he expanded his wireless factory and employed around 60 people. After 1900, Marconi had the patent right for radio. In 1909, Marconi won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He commercialized the use of radio and jumped in the global business. However, the United States overturned his patents in 1935 court case. 20th Century The World was getting used to the technology. However, Brazilian priest Roberto Landel de Moura's voice was the first human voice to be transmitted through the radio in 1900. He conducted his first experience on June 3, 1900, in front of journalists and the consul of Great Britain. One year after the experiment, he was awarded a patent by the Brazilian government. He proposed better equipment than that of Marconi and four months later he moved to the United States to license his device. In June 1912, Marconi introduced the first ever radio factory in England. Internet There had been innovations in the technology, but the primary or basic framework of the radio stayed the same. The distances for transmitting the signals rose, but the base theory was the same. The invention of the internet changed the course of action. It turned tradition where it was used for communication purposes. Now, the radio is being used commercially to promote a brand’s products or services. The concept of live radio play is on the rise. It is a source of entertainment that links modern technology and people with their tradition from the past.
