Proper black mold removal is essential to lessen the health risk of those removing it and those that reside in the affected area.

As with many kinds of mold, black mold thrives in areas of high moisture and humidity. Black mold, or Stachybotrys, is found in various places. Bathrooms, cabinets and kitchens are just a few possible places that it will show up. It has a harmful toxin that affects normal body functions.

The Symptoms of Black Mold Exposure

It can cause swollen, irritated, itchy and burning eyes. Some describe it as like having sand is in their eyes. Another symptom may be a constant dull, throbbing headache accompanied by sneezing. The skin might be red and itchy.

Increased exposure will cause more severe symptoms, despite the fact that it may take time for them to manifest themselves. Another symptom is weight loss. The fungus will also increase the susceptibility to other infectious diseases. Infected sinuses and lungs will affect breathing and increase risk of asthma and respiratory problems.

In the most severe exposures to the fungus, brain damage, lung cancer and even death can occur.

If You Have Been Exposed

Because the symptoms of black mold can be quite tragic, it is important to know if exposure has happened. Exposure is confirmed by a blood test. Exposure to the mold is seen in the human body as an allergic response to something toxic. So the body will increase the amount of killer T white blood cells, producing antibodies in an attempt to destroy the mold spores. So the doctor will look to see if there is a rise in the white blood cell count to confirm diagnosis. A sample of your blood may even be taken to see if it grows this black fungus in the laboratory.

Black Mold Removal

Some think it is as simple as using bleach and wiping down the area. However, mold can hide in crevices and below boards. Even cutting away the boards or the area that the mold has colonized, may still put an individual at risk of breathing in the spores. These spores can linger in the air for a long time without being detected. It can be very complex to remove. It is advised to use the services of a trained professional who is certified and licensed to remove mold. This will reduce your exposure and risk of inhalation.
