Sperm quality does not improve but actually declines with long-term abstinence. Sperm is a component of semen, which consists of seminal plasma and sperm that combine to form ejaculate. Semen is the result of male orgasm during sexual activity. Normal semen comprises over 90% seminal plasma and approximately 10% sperm. Sperm originates from spermatogonia in the testes and undergoes development and maturation in the epididymis. Mature sperm are then transported to the seminal vesicle through the vas deferens, where they are stored. During orgasm, the seminal vesicle contracts, propelling the sperm through the vas deferens and facilitating its physiological activity. After ejaculation, mature sperm from the seminal vesicle are expelled from the body, while some stored in the epididymis replenish the seminal vesicle. Immature sperm from the testes enter the epididymis to undergo maturation. This process allows spermatogenic cells in the testes to generate new sperm. Consequently, long-term abstinence affects the function of sperm-producing cells, leading to their physiological regression. Spermatogenic cells are vital in sperm production, and any impairment to their function results in poor sperm quality. Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine advises against abstaining from sex to increase the chances of conception during pregnancy planning, as it diminishes sperm quality. The study reveals that sperm quality is optimal on the fifth day after the last ejaculation, with a gradual decline thereafter. The researchers highlight that after six days of abstinence, the number and proportion of active sperm reach their lowest point and remain low. Simultaneously, the occurrence of defective sperm gradually increases a few days following abstinence. Consequences of Abstinence: Beyond Sperm Quality Reduction 1. Decreased Sexual Desire Prolonged suppression of sexual urges can lead to unfamiliarity and disconnection from external stimuli. Over time, this can result in decreased sexual desire and a loss of interest in sexual activities. 2. Potential Induction of Prostate Disease Long-term abstinence can cause pelvic congestion, leading to abnormal secretion of prostate fluid and subsequent blockage of the prostate ducts. This significantly increases the risk of developing prostatitis. 3. Impaired Sexual Function Male sexual function follows the principle of "use it or lose it." Extended periods of abstinence raise the likelihood of experiencing premature ejaculation, erectile weakness, and even impotence. Engaging in sexual activity under appropriate circumstances can provide several benefits, including preventing cardiovascular disease, physical exercise, enhancement of immunity, and stress relief. These advantages contribute to overall health and well-being. If semen analysis and examinations indicate poor sperm quality, it is important to seek prompt evaluation at a reputable hospital. Through observations, examinations, hormone measurements, ultrasounds, and other diagnostic procedures, healthcare professionals can determine the underlying factors and provide targeted treatment. Traditional Chinese medicine, such as the Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill, employs kidney tonifying, blood activating, and spleen strengthening therapy to promote sperm growth. This approach often yields favorable outcomes. On the other hand, Western medicine may recommend oral administration of antioxidant medications to patients.
