Pediatric dentistry is the specialization for dentists so that they can handle dental problems that are particular to children. This may include dental developmental difficulties or root canals on adult teeth that have not formed fully. However, there are many parents who still take their children to visit general dentists. The general dentist may have a relationship with the entire family and may, therefore, have a little knowledge and family history which could apply to your child. However, if you are having difficulties with your child, consider children dentistry practitioners.

Pediatric dentistry is involved with the life of a child from the time when their first tooth erupts which should be just about the age of six months. This is, therefore, the perfect time for any parent to introduce their child to children dentistry; the dentist will carefully examine the development of your child’s mouth. There are many dental problems that start quite early and, as a result, the sooner the first dental visit is done, the better for your child’s oral health. Also, take note that pediatric dentistry goes beyond treating existing dental problems; they will always recommend preventive safeguards against any anticipated dental problems such as baby bottle tooth decay, gum disease, teething irritations and prolonged thumb sucking.

Pediatric dentistry is important because tooth decay has been known to happen among infants and young children; this almost always occurs in the upper front teeth even though it can still happen to other teeth as well. Many parents may not realize that their babies’ teeth are vulnerable to decay as soon as they appear. The trouble with tooth decay that happens at this stage is that it may actually enter the underlying bone structure and could, therefore, hurt the development of their permanent teeth. This problem, which is known as baby bottle tooth decay, is normally caused by a long-term exposure of a child’s teeth to liquids that are filled with sugars. When your child consumes sugary liquids the acid will attack the gums and teeth causing decay; only a pediatric dentist will be able to see the problem in advance and advice accordingly.
In children dentistry, there is a great deal of emphasis that is placed in education about children’s oral health. Parents are taught how to brush their teeth correctly from the earliest of ages; the children are also taught how to wash and rinse their mouths with water after they take their meals in school. They are also encouraged on the importance of drinking fountain or tap water and the importance of using straws when they are drinking soda and other sugary drinks so as to keep sugars away from their teeth. If you have any worries about your child’s dental health, pediatric dentistry is the solution.
