It is very important that people of all age group from babies to teens to adults to old people to stay hydrated. Infants and babies are more prone to dehydration because of their smaller body weights and higher turnover of water content in the body.

Also elders and people who are sick are also at a higher risk of dehydration. When you become thirst, it indicates that you haven’t drunk water for a long time. Drinking less water than that is required in the body caused dehydration.

Some common symptoms of dehydration include dizziness, light headedness, dry and sticky mouth, pass less urine than normal, sunken eyes etc. One of the very best ways to prevent dehydration is to have plenty of fluids.

Sometimes only water is not enough to prevent dehydration. We may require electrolytes on special occasions like playing sport, on a sunny day, during exercise etc. Minerals help to maintain the fluid levels in the body and are called electrolytes. Certain organs in the body require these electrolytes if they wanted to function correctly.

Once the electrolytes are lost through sweat and urine, it has to be replaced immediately through fluid intake. Drinking 2 litres of water every day is a great way to keep one hydrated throughout the day. It is not that every individual has to take 2 litres of water every day, but depends on individual capacity to drink water.

Sometimes the more water you take, the cells will resist to absorb the water. It is because the cell might be deprived of water for a long time. So if a person suffers from chronic dehydration he cannot be treated in a single day.

Also the 2 litre goal is also very difficult goal for an individual. So she/he can take some time (a week or two) to get accustomed to the 2 litre water intake every day.
The daily food intake also has an effect in the body’s fluid content. Foods that are rich in water content provide constant supply of fluid to the body. Eating fruits is one of the best ways for an individual to stay hydrated, provided proper fruits are chosen.

A fruit like pineapple, water melon, grapes and peaches have more fluid content and is helpful in providing constant fluid content to the body. It is better to have these fruits as such than to consume in the form of fruit juices. Eating fruits as such helps maintain the sugar content in it.

To keep you hydrated all the time have a bottle of water along with you wherever you go. This prevents you get thirsty and help in dehydration. Staying hydrated will protect the individual form many diseases.

Do not over hydrate the body, which will affect the organs in the body. Remember to drink water before you become thirsty. Also limit the use of caffeine which acts as a diuretic and eliminated water from the body. Try to learn the signs and symptoms of dehydration and treat accordingly. Stay hydrated and be healthy.

Keeping your body well hydrated is very important in order to stay fit and free from illness. If you are a fitness enthusiast, it is even more important for you to drink lots of water as part of your balanced diet. But how would you know if you are eating a balanced diet with sufficient water?
