Strategy is a term that gets thrown around a lot in business, especially when it comes to marketing. Sometimes we use the word to the point of forgetting what it really means to have strategy in your business.

Strategy is much more than what you’re doing. Strategy is about knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing.

Instead of being the person in business that just does things because someone else told you to do it, you need to really think about why you’re doing it. What is the end result you’re trying to achieve? Anytime you start a project or start working on something in your business, if you do it with the end in mind, knowing why you’re doing it before you get too involved in it, your results will be dramatically better.

Having strategy in your business isn’t the same as having a business plan. A business plan is what you take to the bank when you need a loan. The strategy is your plan of action. It takes into account all the things you’re doing in your business, your email marketing, your direct mail, squeeze pages and opt-in’s, and it puts these media together in a way that allows them to work together toward your end result. When you have strategy, you understand why you’re doing these things, and you know how to use them to achieve your goal.

If you’re thinking this is just more work, it’s necessarily more work. It sure can be more fun.

Having a strategy will help you get a better sense of what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, how you’re going to do it, and it sets a time expectation for when you will see results. It takes the guess work out your marketing, and gives you the time to take more time off and to enjoy your life more.

And, having a strategy doesn’t mean you can’t be spontaneous. It’s a plan of action that doesn’t have to make you feel like you’re stuck in concrete. But when you have a new product or service, you really need to think about the campaigns you’re going to use to market that program to get the results you want.

Remember, you can throw mud on a wall and hope something sticks, but that costs money, and time. Having a strategy is like having the recipe for mud that you know will stick all the time. In the end, having a strategy will save you time, and money, and produce more of the results you want.
