Accepting credit cards has been virtually essential for the majority of retail businesses, as the number of consumers that prefer to use credit cards is increasing steadily. Just this year it was marked that eighty percent of consumers own and use a debit card, while seventy-eight percent of consumers own and use a credit card. If such a great percentage prefers to use a non-cash payment for their everyday transactions, how much business are you potentially missing if you do not offer these options?

Accepting credit cards at any retail business has increasingly become easier and easier as more customers switch to only using non-cash options of payment. Retail merchant accounts are actually the most common type of account in use. They are also the type of account with the least amount of fiscal risk, as the consumer has to be physically present in order to make a purchase.

Retail accounts use terminals that are installed in the retail store, usually the very familiar swipe terminal where you swipe the card and then the information is read. Instantly, information from the card is sent to the card issuer for verification of account information and whether the card is valid to be used for this particular transaction. These terminals do require a phone line to transmit information, but allow information to be sent instantly.

With credit card processing, there are also advanced payment processing solutions that offer customers additional reasons to keep coming back to your business. These solutions include debit card processing, check and pre-paid card processing, electronic balance transfers, and the option of having a gift and loyalty cards. These small options go a long way to increasing the customer satisfaction - and your revenue. For example, loyalty cards keep customers coming to your store over rival retail businesses when they can save small percentages with you, or get rewarded for their purchase in some other way.

Credit card processing also allows for both you and the consumer to have extra records of the transaction. Your business can view records of all transactions online. Every detail is listed in depth to provide you with all the information that you may need if a question ever arises. Your customers, of course, have a receipt, and the record is stored with their credit card issuing company so that they have multiple forms of records stored.

While credit cards offer security for consumers, as they don’t have to carry cash and they are reassured that their money is being processed safely, it also protects the business from having an excess of extra cash on the premises of the property.

Returns and credit back are now a hassle-free process. In most cases, credit back to a customer processes back instantly, either to a gift card or to their original form of payment. Depending on the credit card issuer, in some case it can take twenty-four to forty-eight hours for the return to post back to the card. Simple input into the terminal is all that is needed to do returns or credit back, and it is processed in a similar manner as a purchase.

Typically, businesses that have retail storefronts and online stores can form a bundle with their merchant service provider to receive both retail and an Internet merchant account that offer several payment methods. By adding an Internet merchant account, your business can tap into the form of sales that are growing the most quickly - and expand your range of clientele to include customers from all portions of the world.

In 2006, it was noted that there were 1.5 billion credit cards in the United States alone. That statistic alone is a reason why, in this day and age, every business needs to have the option of paying with a credit card available for their consumers. If you are a retail business that specialized in products that small business owners will find necessary, the amount of clientele using credit cards increases drastically. Allow your retail business a dramatic increase in income and customer satisfaction by accepting credit cards. Each merchant account can be customized exclusively for your business, so that options are specific to your needs.
