Silchar is the 2nd biggest city in Assam and is situated 420 km south-east of Guwahati. It is a favorite commercial centre of Assam due to its tea cultivation. Sichar is located on the banks of the River Barak and is famous as Barak Valley. It is the economic gateway to Manipur and Mizoram states, and the main office of the Cachar District. The town is visited by large community of traders from distant various parts of India every year. The place has got the name “island of peace” from Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. Agriculture is the main business of Silchar and it is a main centre of rice, tea and many other agricultural goods. The locals of Silchar are mainly Sylhetis and the other include Bishnupriya Manipuris, Marwaris, the tribal group of Nagas and Manipuri Meiteis. The culture of the city broke out in spectacular occasions like Gandhi Mela and Durga Puja.

Silchar has many beautiful places and some good pilgrim centres. Bhubaneswar Temple and Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Mandir are the major attractions of Silchar. Maniharan Tunnel is other pilgrim spot in the locality of Silchar. One of the Asia's biggest paper mills, Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited is also located in the locality of Silchar.

Martyr's Tomb is most recognized for the victims of Language Movement, also is a notable attraction. Kachari Fort is another attraction that was the seat of former Kachari Dynasty.

Jatinga located nearby Silchar is famous for bird watcher's as the place pulls many numbers of migratory birds every year. Silchar also offer pleasure trip to places like Umrangshu and Maibong which are known for their beautiful beauty. Destinations like Hajo and Guwahati are the cultural attractions for the tourists who are visiting Silchar.

The Sri Sri Kancha Kanti Devi which is about 17 km from Silchar is a favorite temple of the place. The temple consists of four-armed gold statue of the union of goddess Durga and Kali, which was made by a king in olden days.

The Bhuban Hill in Silchar is also quite famous for the Bhubaneswar Temple and the sculptures of Shiv and Parvati. Another attractive place near the Bhuban Hills is the Maniharan Tunnel. The tunnel is said to have been utilized by Lord Krishna at the time of visit to the place.

Silchar is also famous as an education center of Assam as it has some of the good educational institutions in North East India.
