Even if your best friend owns a top publishing company, giving you an immediate "in," this does not guarantee publishing success.
First, you have to write a quality book that has a clear target audience. And your book must answer a common problem or need that audience shares. Then you have to develop a marketing plan, and stick to it for at least two years.
Let's begin with the process that should commence before you write your first word. Begin by reading A LOT. Read both books you passionately love and books you can't seem to make it past page five. Then figure out what the author did in the book you loved, and what was wrong with in the book you couldn't finish. Write down these points so they are crystal clear to you. Read other people's books for inspiration and to discover what you should avoid as a writer.
The next step is to plan out your book. Narrow down your subject, and then divide it into different chapters. Each chapter should address a specific problem or issue your book is going to fix. Break the specific problem down into a few parts. This will help your readers take in the information a little bit at a time rather than overwhelming them with too much information until they feel like they are about to fall asleep. It's sort of like spoon-feeding the information to your readers, a few bits at a time.
The next couple of steps may be obvious. Write your book and then edit and revise as necessary. Continue to edit and revise it as many times necessary to make it more readable. Of course, writing can be difficult, and writing a whole book can seem like an overwhelming task. There are many resources that give you guidelines to help you become more knowledgeable - and you may even like - the process of writing and revisions. Research a number of books about how to write. Better yet, find some books about writing that specifies the type of book you'd love to write. These can serve as maps on your journey in becoming a published author.
Once you have written a book and revised it at least twice, share it with someone whose opinion you highly respect. If you know a good editor, see if you could barter with him or her to read through and edit your manuscript. You can also join a writing group and allow the members an opportunity to critique your work.
Then take all these ideas from other people, and revise your manuscript one last time. And then stop! Put down that pen! Get your hands off the keyboard!
One of the most critical steps to produce a book is to know when to stop the writing and editing process. Know when to stop tinkering with it.
You have finally written your book! Open up the bubbly! And give yourself a celebration night out on the town!
Okay, now that you've learned the steps for producing a book, what do you do if you are still struggling along or get stuck?
